Ad Majorem Dei GloriamSAINT FRANCIS XAVIER JESUIT MAN FOR OTHERS Francis Xavier was born in 1506 at the castle of Javier in Navarre, Spain. At 18, he met Ignatius Loyola in Paris and ridiculed him for not pursuing wealth and fame. Ignatius replied, “What will it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”
for the greater glory of God, and joined with the first companions to form the Society of Jesus in 1540.
Francis was sent by Ignatius in 1541 to evangelize India and the East Indies. In 1549, Xavier arrived in Japan, and dreamed next of China. He traveled as far as Macao, off the China coast, where, at the age of 46, he died of a severe fever with the prayer on his lips, “In thee, O Lord, have I hoped.” STUDENT HANDBOOK INTRODUCTION We at Xavier High School are in our one hundred and sixty sixth year of following the example of our Jesuit patron, Saint Francis Xavier, proclaiming the Gospel message of faith, hope and love to the people of the New York metropolitan area. We are proud of our service in and for the Church, and we are pleased to have you join us as part of that tradition as a Son of Xavier. As a Jesuit school, Xavier High School is animated by faith in God who calls us to use our talents to their fullest potential for His greater glory; by the hope that we can transform our world into an ever better place; and by the love that impels us to build a family of men and women for others. You and your parents or guardians have entered into this enterprise with us, a mutual and sacred commitment to your education and development. We expect our students to demonstrate a sense of responsibility and respect for all the members of the Xavier family, peers and adults alike. This handbook has been written to help you join our school community and to indicate the direction your learning process will take. Please read these pages carefully so you may know what is expected of you as well as of each of us in the Xavier family. Additionally, Xavier recognizes parents as the primary educators of their children. The education of students at our school is a partnership between parents and the school. If, in the opinion of the administration, the partnership is irretrievably broken, the school reserves the right to require the parent to withdraw his son. This is a very serious decision that is not made lightly. This handbook also exists to foster the efficient operation of Xavier High School. To meet this objective, the school administration is given the right and ability to exercise discretion and flexibility in its execution. In appropriate situations, the administration has the discretion to take actions other than those specified in the handbook. This handbook is not intended and should not be considered to create any additional rights for the student and/or his parents/guardians. The handbook is subject to change at any time when determined to be necessary by the administration.
A.CreditsThe program of studies at Xavier is college preparatory. It includes a rigorous schedule of courses, both required and elective. Every student must carry a minimum of 6 ½ credits a year. Some required courses in our curriculum are based on the requirements of New York State, while others come from the convictions of our Jesuit and Xavier heritage. With the approval of the appropriate department and the Office of the Headmaster, honors courses and advanced placement courses may be taken by exceptional students. Again, for exceptional students, extra courses beyond those required are sometimes made available.
Religious Education is required in all four years. English is required in all four years. Foreign & Classical Language: a three year sequence in the foreign language begun in freshman year is required. Students may opt to begin a second foreign language in junior year must continue their initial language in senior year. Seniors who opt to take a second foreign language in senior year must also continue with their first foreign language. Electives are available in foreign language in senior year. Mathematics is required in each of the first three years. Electives are available in senior year. Laboratory Science is required for three years. Each student is required to take both biology and, either physics or chemistry. Electives are available in senior year. Social Studies/History is required in all four years. Health Education is required for one semester in sophomore year. Students with course conflicts in sophomore year must arrange with the Dean of Academics to take health at another time before graduation. Art (one-half credit) is required in freshman year. Students in Band can use this to fulfill this requirement. Electives in Art are available to sophomores, juniors and seniors. Music (one-half credit) is required in sophomore year. Students in full year sophomore art can use this to fulfill this requirement. Band is available in all four years. Vocal Music is available in all four years. Physical Education is required in all four years. Military Science (six week introductory program) is required of all freshmen. Sophomores, juniors, and seniors who elect to join the Junior ROTC program take Military Science in those years.
