Highlights from 2009 Annual Conference

Action Items

  • Resolution on Support for Overtime Pay Protection (APACD #8.3)

  • Salaries and Status-Related Policies (APACD #8.2) - ALA-APA is presenting a draft of salaries and status-related policies at this Annual Conference to ALA-APA Council.

Pay Equity Bibliography was updated and announced in May 2009 - http://www.ala-apa.org/salaries/payequitybib.html.
Professionals for the Public Interest is a coalition of associations and unions concerned with professional integrity. Senior Associate Executive Director Mary Ghikas represented ALA-APA and ALA at the launch of this initiative on May 20, 2009. PftPI is collecting stories from workers whose integrity or professionalism has been challenged. Integrity at Work stories can be submitted at www.pfpti.org. You are encouraged to submit stories to build awareness of challenges faced by librarians and support staff.
SirsiDynix-ALA-APA Better Salaries Award ended this year. Committee members are approaching potential funders.

National Library Workers Day was celebrated by many libraries this year. Atlantic County Library System in New Jersey, thanks to the library foundation, gave each employee logo-embossed business card holders and delivered cakes to each of 10 branches. At Gloucester County College, posters proclaiming National Library Workers Day were hung throughout the campus. Brooklyn Public Library gave out reusable bags with the library logo and National Library Workers Day. Other ideas are on the NLWD website at http://www.ala-apa.org/nlwd.
Legislation and Pay Equity

The wage gap is 77.8% between the average salary for women and men and the gap has grown for women and people of color since 2006. Equal Pay Day was April 28, when the National Committee on Pay Equity encouraged the passage of the Paycheck Fairness Act and celebrated the passage of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act in January. The PFA has been passed in the U.S. House of Representatives and awaits passage in the U.S. Senate.
