SOMO Paper (2008) Promotion of Foreign Direct Investments-What are the costs This paper primarily mentions the costs linked to the promotion of FDI into a region. These costs are not only in monetary but also intangible terms. Initially it talks about the introduction of FDI, its investment mechanism and how it benefits the economy. Different pillars like the government and the investors that support the promotion are also mentioned and a case study about how the promotion of FDI takes place in Egypt is also given. This tells us about various committees that Egypt is apart of, on which subject and the services involved and the contracts that Egypt has signed for the promotion of its FDI. Then the paper talks about various promotion instruments like contracts and committees along with the appropriate government policies that aid FDI. Then various costs of FDI promotion like

The effectiveness of such promotions is also a question since there is no clarity in transparency on the spending done for promotions visa vis the FDI received. Thus, there is a need for cost to benefit analysis to understand this better. There is also no guarantee of FDI dues to promotions also the barrier removal to foreign investors does not guarantee investments. There is also a need to relate sustainable growth of a region with its FDI on a future basis.
