2015-2016 Atlantic Coast High School Ms. Bobula Welcome to AP Environmental Science! As you can see by the course objectives, we have a lot of material to cover over a fairly short period of time. The goal of this class is not only to prepare you for the AP exam but to also equip you with a better understanding of the environment. Expect a rigorous year but as long as you study and keep up with the readings, there should be no reason you can not succeed in this class. Get ready for a challenging and exciting school year together! If additional time is required, I am also available other weekdays after school as long as it is scheduled ahead of time. GradesGrades in the class are on a straight point system. Though there will be points assigned to homework assignments, labs, quizzes, and a variety of other assignments, the majority of your grade will come from your test grades. STUDY!!! Quizzes/JournalsEvery class will begin with a quiz, journal, or practice AP exam questions, so be prepared to do one or the other. If you miss a set of practice questions or a journal, it is your responsibility to obtain the prompt from the makeup folder in the room. If you miss a quiz, you will be required to take the make-up quiz during the next unit exam. Journals are graded once per quarter. Late WorkAssignments are due on their due date. No late work will be accepted under any circumstance. TestsThere will be several tests given throughout the year. Tests will be designed to ensure you are keeping up with all assigned work as well as understanding it. Test will be given at the end of each unit. A minimum of 10% of test questions will be cumulative, drawing from previous units. Remember, the majority of your report card grade will be derived from your test scores. Review Book It is expected that every student have the Princeton Review Cracking the AP Environmental Science Exam (or equivalent book). The book will be due the day of the AP Exam, Monday, May 3rd. All multiple choice questions and every FRQ must be completed. This includes all sections of the book as well as the two practice tests. Absences and Make-UpThe bottom line is absences will happen. However, if you miss an assignment, you are required to make the work up. If you miss a day when an assignment is due, it is expected due the next class period. If you happen to miss a quiz you will be required to take the make-up quiz the day of the unit test. If you miss a test on a test day, you will be required to take the make-up test the following week after school. Bear in mind that make-up quizzes and exams are more difficult since you will have additional time to study for them. Reading Listed below are the corresponding chapters in your textbook you will be responsible for reading for each unit. I realize we will not always cover material in the order of your textbook but this does facilitate a smoother transition between topics. If you do not read each chapter thoroughly, your success in this class will be limited. I cannot emphasize enough the importance of keeping up with all the reading assignments as well as studying all material reviewed or assigned in class. This includes such titles as Deep Impact (PG-13) and Day After Tomorrow (PG-13). Watching movies however will depend on time constraints in the class. AP Exam The AP Environmental Science Exam, like all other AP exams at ACHS, has non-optional attendance. Any student who misses the exam will be charged a monetary fine by the school.
