Residency program descriptions:
FALL/SPRING RESIDENCY
Join the collective for 2 weeks to 5 weeks of art making and community work. Residents perform social outreach in the heartland of rural Iowa for 3 afternoons a week and receive creative space, housing, and a collaborative work atmosphere.
Grin City seeks applications from artists of all disciplines at all stages in their career.
Residents receive housing and private studio space and join in the group community outreach three afternoons a week. This includes working around the farm, tending to the garden, helping out with Studio 4 and Studio 6 after school arts programs and helping prepare community meals. The rest of the time is theirs.
SUMMER EMERGING ARTIST RESIDENCY
During the summer, Grin City invites ten to twelve college-aged writers, visual or performance artists for one of two month-long sessions. Those eligible for the Emerging Artist Residency are juniors or seniors in college at the time of application. Must be 21 years of age. Applicants from Iowa colleges and universities are given special consideration.
Residents are required to work in the garden two mornings a week. Residents' rent and food are free and they are provided housing, a private studio, and a $100 stipend for their stay.
Their residency culminates in a gallery show and sale at the Grinnell Arts Center.
Ideal candidates have a strong portfolio and are serious about pursuing a career in their field for which they are applying, but do not need to have majored in it. They embrace artistic and work-based collaboration, and have an interest in community engagement. Interest in local foods and/or agriculture is a plus, but is by no means required.
