Hailing from rural Kansas, Roy Rutngamlug took a circuitous route to the arts. Growing up in a small town offered little in the way of distractions so his father’s VHS camera and small band of friends dedicated to acting served as the de facto after school activity and first foray into filmmaking. After receiving a BA in Economics from Washington University in St. Louis, Roy took a brief stint in to work in corporate America as an analyst for a certain huge, computer manufacturer in Austin, TX. Shortly after, he was accepted into the film production program at the University of Texas earning his MFA. Roy’s work has screened at festivals around the country and counts Wong Kar-Wai and Terrence Malick as his favorite filmmakers.

Artist INC Homework
The Artist INC program provides participants with many materials and resources to learn about and practice the skills involved with managing the business end of an arts career. We understand, however, that time is limited. Below are suggested and required homework for each session of Artist INC. If you can’t complete all the suggested items, simply keep track of what you have not done and plan to come back to it at a later date. The required items will be used as a part of the small group exercises and should be completed so that you can fully participate in the small group work.

Goal Setting Exercises
In Artist INC, while we discuss and provide tools for marketing, legal issues, budgeting/taxes, raising money and technology, we spend the majority of our small group time on the goal setting process. There are several reasons for this dedication of time and focus.
-
There is considerable evidence, both in our experiences as well as in academic research, that people who have clearly defined goals are much more likely to achieve success.
-
Strategies for all of the other areas of an art-business (marketing, legal, financial, technological) must relate to your overall goals. Creating a marketing plan based on selling your paintings online, is not likely to help you achieve a goal of a high end museum placement. Once you know what it is that you ultimately want, the direction you should take for many of the other areas fall into place rather quickly.
-
There is a path to every location you might want to go to. But, in order to identify that path, you must determine that location first. If you simply get in your car and start driving without the location in mind, you’ll end up somewhere, but it’s unlikely that you’ll end up where you want to be.
Goal setting is a multi-step process working from self-understanding, through clarification of personal values and desired lifetime accomplishments, down to specific identification of shorter-term steps on the path. The Artist INC goal setting process includes a variety of exercises you’ll find on the following pages:
-
Success Inventory
-
Short-term Goal Practice
-
ADEP Analysis
-
Obituary
-
Ten-Year Goals
-
Five-Year Goals
-
Three-Year Goals
-
One-Year Goals
As you work on these goal setting exercises, it may help to talk about them with your significant other, family and/or peers your respect. Consider your ideas relating to lifestyle, family involvement, geographic location, and leisure time. These exercises will help you find the path toward your personal definition of success and does not need to be limited by what society identifies as the correct path to take.
As you are completing the goal setting exercises, YOU MUST WRITE DOWN YOUR RESPONSES. While it may feel like thinking through the answers is enough, you will find that once you start writing your responses your ideas are not as clearly formed as you believed they were when you were simply thinking about them. It is also important to have a record you can refer back to, to note your successes and identify areas that need refinement.
Success Inventory
Imagine you have achieved success. What does that look like to you? The definition of success is different for everyone. While one person’s success might mean having a million dollars, another person’s version of success could be having time for family and relaxation. The clearer picture you have of what personal success means and looks likes to you, the more effectively you’ll be able to identify and work towards short and long term goals.
A few options have been provided to help you clarify your ideas. Check those that are appropriate and identify additional ones to complete the picture. You won’t likely have enough time to identify all the items that define your personal success during the session, so be sure to come back to this during the upcoming week and as you evolve your ideas over time.

Short-Term Goal Exercise
As you fill in this short-term goal exercise and listen to your peers’ short-term goals, keep in mind the goal setting process discussed earlier in the session.
-
Select a goal. State it in measurable terms.
-
Determine whether the goal is achievable.
-
Identify why this goal is worthwhile. How does it relate to your personal definition of success?
-
Anticipate and identify difficulties you might encounter.
-
Devise strategies and specific action steps you can take to achieve the goal.
Choose one issue in your art-business life you can and would like to resolve in the next week and write a goal to achieve the issue.
|
|
How does this short-term goal relate to your long-term ideas of success?
|
|
What is your action plan for achieving this short-term goal?
|
|
What potential problems might you encounter in achieving this short-term goal? How can you mitigate these potential problems?
