CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT
As introduced.
An Assembly Resolution urging Congress to provide financial support for the schooner A.J. Meerwald
Whereas, The long and distinguished history of New Jersey is inexorably linked to the rich and colorful traditions of maritime industries, such as the taking of oysters from the Delaware Bay, which provided employment, and a treasured way of life to generations of New Jerseyans; and
Whereas, The A.J. Meerwald is a Delaware Bay oyster schooner, a nationally significant vessel designed and built in New Jersey to meet the needs of the State’s oyster fishing industry which was the backbone of the region’s economy and culture; and
Whereas, The A.J. Meerwald was donated to the Delaware Bay Schooner Project in 1989, painstakingly restored as a sailing classroom by dedicated New Jerseyans, and designated by law in 1998 as the official tall ship of the State of New Jersey; and
Whereas, As part of its role as the official State tall ship, the A.J. Meerwald serves as a reminder of New Jersey’s marine heritage and is an established educational institute in its 25th year of providing educational resources to teach people about our marine environment; and
Whereas, In 1995, the A.J. Meerwald was added to the National Register of Historic Places, acknowledging New Jersey as a maritime state with a rich heritage and vast natural legacy worthy of celebration, recognition and stewardship; and
Whereas, The A.J. Meerwald is an ideal symbol of New Jersey’s great heritage and an effective classroom for teaching the youth of New Jersey; and
Whereas, Given that the A.J. Meerwald is New Jersey's official tall ship, an established educational institution, a sailing representative of the Garden State and one of its most visible and beloved ambassadors, it is fitting and proper for the ship to be properly maintained; and
Whereas, This House respectfully urges Congress to provide financial support for the A.J. Meerwald, to help maintain this nationally registered, historic sailing representative of New Jersey; now, therefore,
Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:
1. The General Assembly of the State of New Jersey urges Congress to provide financial support for the schooner A.J. Meerwald, the official tall ship of the State of New Jersey.
2. Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the President and Vice President of the United States, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Minority Leader of the United States House of Representatives, the President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate, the Minority Leader of the United States Senate, and each Senator and Representative from New Jersey in the Congress of the United States.
STATEMENT
This assembly resolution urges Congress to provide financial support to help maintain the schooner A.J. Meerwald, New Jersey’s State tall ship.
The A.J. Meerwald is a Delaware Bay oyster schooner, a nationally significant vessel type designed and built only in New Jersey. It was donated to the Delaware Bay Schooner Project in 1989 and restored as a sailing classroom. In 1995 it was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 1998 it was designated as the official tall ship of the State of New Jersey.
The A.J. Meerwald is an established educational institute in its 25th year of providing educational resources for teaching people about our marine environment. As New Jersey's official tall ship, an established educational institution, a sailing representative of the Garden State and one of its most visible and beloved ambassadors, the ship should be properly maintained. Financial support from the federal government would help to accomplish this goal.
