8th Grade Language Arts
Second Quarter you will be required to read a classic book. Please check our classroom library if you need to borrow a classic book and sign it out in the Library Log. Before you start reading your classic, see me for approval or if you have any questions about a book.

“Oliver Twist”; “Bleak House” by Charles Dickens
“The Deer Slayer”; “Last of the Mohicans” by James Fenimore Cooper
“Gulliver’s Travels” by Jonathan Swift
“Under the Greenwood Tree” by Thomas Hardy
“The Woman in White”; “The Moonstone” by Wilkie Collins
“Persuasion” by Jane Austen
“Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury
“The Outsiders” by S.E. Hinton
“Orphan Train” by Christina Baker Klein
“The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd
“All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr

***Books by Agatha Christie, William Shakespeare, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Geoffrey Chaucer and Alexandre Dumas are also excellent traditional classic choices. Many of the titles above can be purchased on Amazon.com or check Thriftbooks.com.
Directions: Make 15-20 copies, double-sided, for yourself (for the year) of the Reading Log. Hole punch and place in center of 3-prong plastic folder. Minimum reading at least 45 minutes. Three (3) times a week, write 1-2 main points of what you read on your log and record pages read. Have your parent/guardian(s) initial log. Folder check weekly.
