Black History Month Essay Contest


Atlanta-area students may honor a well-known figure from Black History – and win cash awards and other prizes in the process – by entering The Atlanta Voice Newspaper’s Black History Month Essay Contest.


Students in elementary schools, middle schools and high schools are invited to submit essays on the following topic: The Person I Admire Most In Black History Is…
Inspired by someone from the past or a prominent leader today, students should explain why they admire the selected figure in Black History. Essays should be 350 words or less and should be typewritten, computer-printed or emailed.
First-place, second-place and third place winners will be chosen at each school level. Winners will receive cash awards and other designated prizes.
Winning entries will be printed in February editions of The Atlanta Voice. All entries will be printed online at www.theatlantavoice.com.
Entries are due no later than 5:00 p.m., Monday, January 31, 2011. Winners will be notified by telephone.

The Atlanta Voice Newspaper, the Atlanta Association of Black Journalists (AABJ), the J. Lowell Ware Scholarship Fund and the Atlanta Public Schools are sponsoring this essay contest to encourage young people to celebrate Black History and honor the contributions of African-Americans who came before them. AABJ members and professional journalists will help judge essays and determine the winners.
