Summary of “Supporting Family Values”
Linda Chavez, in her essay “Supporting Family Values,” claims that Hispanic immigration benefits the United States because they work hard, earn a decent living, pursue a higher education, & have strong family values. The author uses several pieces of evidence to support her claim that Hispanic immigrants benefit the U.S. First, Chavez says that Hispanic immigrants work hard: Studies show that “Illegal immigrant males have a much higher labor force participation rates than the native born, 94% compared with 83% for US-born males” (422).
Secondly Chavez states that Hispanic immigrants earn a decent living. Chavez writes “The median household income for illegal immigrants was $36,000” (422). Chavez also says that Hispanic immigrants pursue a higher education when she says, “Nearly half of illegal immigrants between the ages of 18 and 24 who have graduated from high school attend college” (422). Finally, Chavez claims that Hispanic immigrants have strong family structures by saying “Among the illegal population, 47% of households consist of a mother, a father, and their children” (422). In conclusion, Hispanic immigrants should be allowed to stay in the United States if they meet a few simple requirements.
