CHAPTER TWO: MATERIALS AND METHODS

2.1 Selection of The Study Area


The Jalalabad Union was chosen on purpose as the research location. The union is one of the worst afflicted unions in the Sadar Upazila within the Gopalganj district due to river bank erosion.
Four villages, Ichhakhali, Dubsi, char dhulaitala, ghaga dhulaitala were chosen as the study's particular sites. The selection was based on recommendations from the Union Parishad Office (UPO), Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), Union Parishad Members, and Sadar upazila officials. In these settlements, annual flooding and riverbank erosion inflict human suffering and harm to crops, cattle, fisheries, and other resources.

2.1.1 Geographic location


The research was done in four villages, Ichhakhali, Dubsi char dhulaitala and ghaga dhulaitala Jalalabad Union of the sadar upazila upazila of the Gopalganj district.
Jalalabad Union of Sadar Upazila of the district along with the river madhumoti are the most affected areas of recent decades. Jalalabad Union is located about 20 km North West from Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. which is located at 23°07'41.4" north latitudes and 89°44'08.6" east longitudes. Madhumati River is located on three sides of Jalalabad Union; North, West and South and Gopinathpur on the east side, Suktail Union on the south east side and on the north east side Kotakol union of Narial disrict. The upazila has a total area of 3969 square kilometers estimated population of 15,632 people (BBS, 2011).

2.2 Methodology

2.2.1 Preparation of a questionnaire:


Based on the study's aims, a questionnaire was created to collect the information. To guarantee the respondents' participation, care has been made to ensure that the questions are clear and easy to understand.

2.2.2 Primary data collection:


We obtained primary data from local individuals, including riverbank erosion victims and witnesses. Men and women representing various age groups and vocations, such as farmers, fishermen, small business owners, educators, and religious leaders, completed questionnaires to collect data. 110 individuals were interviewed to collect primary data, and they were asked about the trend of river bank erosion over the past two decades, the causes of the erosion, and the socio-economic impacts on the local community, including occupational migration, land loss, infrastructure damage, and the impact on education and health care, among other things.

2.2.3 Secondary data collection:


For secondary data on riverbank erosion, several organizations, periodicals, and journals, the Union Parish Add Office, the Bangladesh Water Development Board, and other sources were consulted.

2.2.4 Processing and analysis of data:


Before analysis, the data were processed using a variety of statistical methodologies and software, including SPSS, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word, among others. The data was finally provided in text format with the pertinent images, tables, and figures.
