Student presentations
Each student is to make a 12-minute presentation (<10 PowerPoint slides), which will be followed by 3-minute questioning. A computer will be available to load your ppt file. Please bring a written summary and discussion (in about two pages) in your own words about the major findings, significance, and implications of the paper(s).
The presentation should be targeted at your fellow students so please include necessary background to inform and motivate your audience. Key points to cover: what is the paper about? What are the major phenomena/scientific questions it addresses? What methods does it use and what are the major results? What are the major contributions of the research? What do you feel most excited at, and why?
Usually it is not feasible to present the whole paper in a 12-minute talk so you need to be selective, choosing the most important results and building a coherent story for your talk. You can earn extra credits with additional reading and synthesis with other related papers. (Usually one can find additional reading in the References section of the main paper or by searching on AMS/AGU journal sites. If you choose a short paper in Nature, Science or Geophys Res Lett, usually you need to read one additional paper to fill 10 slides.)
Below is a list of papers that could form the basis for your presentation. Your presentation could still be on a topic/paper outside this list. In that case, please consult me by e-mailing or showing me the paper(s) you would like to present.
The presentations are scheduled on February 14 (Monday) and 18 (Friday) afternoon 1:30-3:00pm in HIG309, as the make-up for the missing lecture of January 27. Please e-mail me the reference for the paper(s) you are going to present by February 7 (Monday).
