Deep Sea Fishing Club Minutes
July 1, 2017
President Davison (Mo) called the meeting to order at 9:00 am and led the members in the Pledge of Allegiance. John Kluck reported that the club had 15 new members and 5 that renewed their membership. Mo announced that he would stay after the regular meeting to explain the club and answer any questions new members may have.
Under general information Mo thanked Ida Donegan for editing the new membership pamphlet which she also developed.
Club member Wayne Voder brought Captain Ray Moses to the meeting and offered to serve as Coordinator if the Captain became part of the regular trip sign ups. The Captain spoke to the group and offered inshore trips launching out of Yankeetown. This included half day and full day trips for trout and red fish, full day trips for shark fishing, and 5-6 hour scalloping trips for 1-3 anglers ranging from $275 to $450. Mo invited the Captain to set at the sign up tables, and the members to talk to him, to see the amount of interest they have in fishing with him? Captain Ray can be reached at 352-266-9022, at captainrayfishing@gmail.com or on facebook @CaptRayMoses.
OLD BUSINESS: Mo thanked Treasurer Steve Newman for all the work over the past months, to find a replacement charter for the club, after the Pastime Princess which went out of business. Steve spoke to the club and offered a suggestion that he would coordinate monthly trips, alternating between the Gulf and the Atlantic, to see what kind of interest and participation the club has. If this is successful it could become part of the regular monthly sign ups? Steve offered Wednesday August 9th as the first trip going out of Tarpon Springs. There was interest by the membership so Mo asked them to see Steve about signing up for the first trip in August. Before the end of the meeting 12 people had signed up! If you would like to go on this trip Steve can be reached at 352-633-2569. Web Master Dean Hooker will put info on the web site.
FISHING REPORTS FOR JUNE: The Captain canceled the regular scheduled trip on the Thunder due to the lack of signups. Grouper season is open and the club typically fills the boat with 28 people during this period. The heat and weather has taken its toll, however the Captain holds one day a month for the club, turning away other customers, and we do not want to risk losing this boat due to low participation. Coordinator Tom Martin scheduled a second trip on the Thunder in June but it was blown out so no report.
Several other trips in June, in the Gulf and Atlantic, were also canceled due to the weather. When flats trips could get out there were reports of sand trout, spotted sea trout, and red fish being caught. Dick Crowl did land a goliath grouper weighing around 50 pounds, congrats. To Dick!
NEW BUSINESS: Mo spoke about the history of the club fishing with the Thunder and the club providing transportation to and from the boat. Some years ago the membership insisted that the club make transportation available. With cost of a bus the club needs a minimum number of people riding it to break even. Traditionally that cost per member was $30; however the club lowered that to $25 last year but still needs 20 members riding to break even. During this report 24 people had signed up to fish the Thunder in July however 6 of them were driving not allowing for a bus! Mo asked that members signing up for the Thunder to please consider taking the bus to help out other members and continue making it available.
