Deep Sea Fishing Club Minutes

June 3, 2017

President Davison (Mo) called the meeting to order with the Pledge of Allegiance at 9:00 am. Secretary John Kluck reported that there were 22 new members and 8 members that renewed their membership at the meeting. Mo welcomed the new members and invited them to stay after the regular meeting where he would talk about the club and its Captains and answer any questions the new members may have.

Mo had several announcements beginning with an email from The Villages Transportation. The Club had reserved a bus for a trip to fish the Thunder on May 18, 2017. The bus never showed up forcing our members to scramble and establish car pools to get them to Hernando to meet the boat. The Villages Transportation took full responsibility for their “computer glitch” and committed it would be corrected for future trips. Mo noted that all the years using The Villages Transportation had worked fine and this was an isolated incident.

On a sad note Mo reported that long time member Vivian Arnold had passed. Remembered by all members who had fished with Vivian, she will be missed! A memorial service will be held on July 16 with her distribution of ashes at sea at a later date.

Wind in May was not the Clubs friend, as Mo reported several trips were canceled because of it. As a result something else happened that month that is not acceptable. 3 times in May Treasurer Steve Newman was not notified of the cancelations until after he had deposited the member’s money for that trip. A communication was circulated among the Coordinator’s reminding them to be sure someone on each scheduled trip is assigned the responsibility of notifying the Treasurer in a timely manner if a trip is canceled. Mo explained to the new members that the Club holds member’s money until after a trip goes out. If a trip is canceled for any reason, the Treasurer holds the members money and returns it to them.

The Club is looking for a volunteer to become a Coordinator for a party boat in the Atlantic. Mo told the new members that we had used the Pastime Princess for many years and we have been searching for another option since that boat went out of business. Interested members should contact Treasurer Steve Newman.

The last announcement was that Jerry Banhart was at a signup table as the Coordinator for Blue Water Adventures. Mo told the members that this charter was handled a little different than most. Normally Captains give the Club future dates for members to sign up for usually fishing out of the same docks month to month. In the case of Blue Waters, the Coordinator just takes the names of members wanting to fish that particular month and turns them over to the Captain. The Captain then notifies those members signed up and puts together trips, either in the Atlantic or Gulf, whichever they prefer. The members pay the Captain directly and no money is handled through the club with this Captain.

FISHING REPORTS FOR MAY: No report from the Thunder. On the flats fishing was a mixed bag. Members were limiting out on spotted sea trout on days the wind was minimal but those on trips following a big wind catching fish was a challenge. Harold Hartley did hook a tarpon weighing around 200 pounds fishing with Captain Robinson out of Cedar Key. Report was he got the fish near the boat but it got tired of messing with Harold, broke off, and swam away.

The Waterproof had a good month producing big Amber Jack, Mahi Mahi, and a variety of Snapper.

TRIP STILL AVAILABLE AT THE JUNE MEETING: Mo informed the new member’s that dates with Captains are posted on our website at least two months in advance. Members can call the Coordinator’s for Captains and book trips well in advance of the monthly meeting. The following only represents those trips that still had openings the day of the meeting, not the total amount of trips that were available through the club.
