Liscomb, Dec. 24 -- M. F. (Mace) Morgan, a teacher in the schools of Hardin and Marshall counties for many years and superintendent of schools in several Iowa towns and a resident of Liscomb in his earlier days, died Monday morning in a Des Moines hospital, according to word received here today. Mr. Morgan who was 86 years of age, fell Saturday in his home, 1161 Twenty-sixth street, Des Moines, and suffered a fracture of the hip. Pneumonia developed and eath followed shortly after. Mr. Morgan was born in February, 1849, in Yadkin county, North Carolina, the oldest of the 11 children of Hardin and Elizabeth Morgan. Teacher 35 Years. The first year in Iowa was spent in New Providence and in 1870 the family moved to Liscomb. For several years Mr. Morgan taught in the rural schools, his first position being as teacher of the Hazel Green school in Bangor township. He continued to teach for more than 35 years and served as superintendent of schools at Radcliffe, Mapleton, Lake City, Deep River, and Altoona. He was married 37 years ago to Miss Judith Garrett of Altoona. When he retired from active school work he went to Des Moines to make his home. He is survived by his widow and two children, Mrs. henry Lebby of Des Moines and Hubert Morgan of Trenton, N. M. A sister, Mrs. Emma Ralls of Union, and two brothers, Jack Morgan of Atascadero, Calif., and James Morgan of Seattle, Wash., also survive. He was a member of the University Church of Christ and the University Men's Sunday school class of Des Moines. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Dunn Funeral home, Des Moines, and burial will be in a Des Moines cemetery on Dec 24, 1938 at Liscomb, IA, USA. He was also known as Mace.mxxxii Biography: Started schooling in North Carolina, then under Mr. Jennings of the Liscomb IA school. He taught a year or two of school then attended Penn College at Oskaloosa, IA. He attended Drak University in Des Moines, IA, where he graduated from the Normal Department. Mace was most anxious that his parents would be cared for properly in their old age and delayed his marriage until they had passed away. He paid for perpetual care of the Morgan lot in the Liscomb cemetery. When his brother Jim was 8 years old, he wanted to adopt him so that he could personally see that Jim received a fine education. It was due to Mace's influence that Jim received his Ph.B. degree from Drake University. Jim had covered 4 years prepratory work and four years University work in three years of actual attendence. Prof. Shepard once asked Mace why his brother Jim had never returned to finish his work so he could graduate. When Mace told of Jim's record, Prof. Shepard at once saw to it that Jim was given his diploma and received his Ph.B. degree. As a boy on the plantation after the end of the Civil War, a rebel cavalry soldier on one of the horses given by Gen. Grant to all the rebel calvary soldiers, came riding thro the field where Mace was working. The soldier asked Mace for directions to a certain place. Mace gave the desired information. The man dismounted, walked over to Mace, and knocked him down. He then remounted and rode away. This incident illustrates the feeling the returned rebels had for any Northern sympathizer. Throughout Mace's life no matter where he lived, his influence for all that was good and fine in life was felt by everyone who came in contact with him. At the 1954 Morgan reunion, the prgram was in memory of "Uncle Mace." Glowing tributes were paid by all present and read from letters sent in by other relatives. His son Hubert gave many interesting side lights on his father's life. Mace used a piano stool to teach his son to swim. Mace was ahead of his time in many educational ways. Was advocating a "Teacher's Pension Bill" long before his death. It was heart-warming to listen to Hubert's fine talk about his worthy father and to realize that as long as any Morgan descendant is alive or any pupil of Mason Morgan lives the name of Mason Morgan will stand for Nobility, Honesty, the best of education and good citizenship. As a pioneer teacher his influence will go marching on and on. He was a teacher and superintendent of Iowa schools: Radcliffe, Mapleton, Lake City, Deep River, and Altoona. According to Fern Hauser, he had a sweet tenor voice and played the guitar and added much to everyone's music education and appreciation. He was also known as Mason Fewell MORGAN. Download 3.03 Mb.
