Differentiating Instruction
1. Why do the educators in this video use a variety of approaches to help their students learn?
Educators use a variety of approaches to help their students because their technology plan is for all students, even those who have special needs. They want a student that possesses, inclusion, meaning that all students are equal participants with all. So, to meet all the separate needs for all students, multiple approaches are necessary, especially those using new technology to improve reading, writing, and spelling skills.
2. What are some of the technology tools and software that students in this video use?
Some of the technologies used in the video are Quicktionary Pens, Franklin Spellers, Math Shark, and AlphaSmart keyboards. Ryan, the 5th grade student profiled in the video struggled with reading and writing skills, as they did not match his present oral/speaking skills. AlphaSmart really helped him practice writing very frequently to catch up with his speaking level.
3. What do teachers need to do to ensure that the technology they are using truly meets the needs of diverse learners?
There are a few things teachers need to do to ensure the technology they use meet students needs. For they need to encourage kids to know themselves, what are they good at and what they needs help with. With that knowledge, an individual learning plan can develop to address core needs for each and every student. A simple interview setting, in which teachers help identify what they need to work on could work. Another tip is for teachers to keep in mind that talk is cheap; they must continue to meet the daily challenges to keep doing what is right. They cannot stand ideally as students struggle with certain subjects and fall behind their peers. Being ever vigilant and using the technology available will meet the needs of all learners.
4. How might you use some of these technologies in your classroom?
I would use these technologies similar to how the school in Schaumberg did, but go even further. First, my class would have different blocks using the different technologies shown in the video. Certain days of the week we would focus on spelling while others math. However, in a grade school class, reading and writing would be the primary focus of the classroom time and homework. Getting those kids prepared for middle school is essential, so I would utilize the AlphaSmarts and Franklin Spellers. Finally, I would assign homework in relation to these educational technologies too. Just like in the video, I would encourage my students to “play around with” the technology they take home so they could teach others and me how to use it as well. I believe teaching someone a skill or task demonstrates the highest level of mastery in a subject.
