  Retired Navy (enlisted submarine radioman and supply officer), 1977 – 1994

  As an enlisted submarine radioman, I operated and repaired transmitters, receivers, antenna systems, cryptographic equipment and teletypes. I was very instrumental in our submarine being the top submarine in the Atlantic Fleet. At one point, I even single-handedly ran our Radio room during heavy seas for 91 hours (almost four days) straight while my Senior Chief was laid up in bed sea sick. I did all this while our Division was being evaluated by our Squadron. I was also able to intercept two important messages: one allowed our submarine to intercept an aircraft carrier to simulate torpedoing it and the other allowed our submarine to know in advance the time we were to launch a missile. In addition, I was instrumental in our Division receiving the Green “C” for being the number one Communication Division in our Squadron. As a result, my Commanding Officer asked me what I wanted as a reward. I requested and received the following three things: the duty station I wanted, a specific school I needed to complete an NEC which allowed me to receive a higher reenlistment bonus and a special program, the Enlisted Education Advancement Program which allowed me to go to school full time to obtain my Associated Degree.

  As an officer in the United States Navy, I was the Supply Officer / Food Service Officer on the USS Pargo SSN650. I was also the Assistant Supply Officer, Food Service Officer and Disbursing Officer for Naval Construction Battalion Seventy Four (NMCB 74) also known as the Fighting Seabees.
