University of Cape Town Postdoctoral Research Fellowships

The closing date for receipt of applications by departments is July 30 annually. Department heads are then requested to ensure that applications received are submitted to the Department of Research Development.

Any application received directly by the Postgraduate Funding Office will be forwarded to what appears to be the most relevant host department, but applicants are urged to contact the appropriate head of department in the first instance if at all possible.
Amount Note: The fellowships are tenable for a maximum of 12 months. The stipend is fixed at R85,000 for the full academic year, which includes any relocation expenses. Subject to approval from the SARS, stipends attached to the fellowships are exempt from income tax and are payable half yearly in advance. The fellowships carry no fringe benefits and no direct services to the university are expected from the candidates.
Eligibility: South African and foreign candidates are eligible, but applications from doctoral students or doctoral graduates from UCT will not be considered. Preference will be given to recently qualified applicants who are not yet in academic or research posts and who have not previously held postdoctoral appointments.

Applications from other African countries and from women will be given preference.

There is no restriction on any particular discipline or field of research. It is crucial that applicants' research interests and faculty needs are in line with those of the host department.

The University of Western Australia: W. Alton Jones Foundation

The goals of the W. Alton Jones Foundation are: to build a sustainable world by developing new ways for humanity to interact sustainably with the planet's ecological systems and, and to build a secure world by eliminating the possibility of nuclear war and by providing alternative methods of resolving conflicts and promoting security. The Foundation has two main programs:

The Secure World program, seeks to build a secure world, free from the nuclear threat, by promoting common security and strategies related to how nations can structure their relationships without resorting to nuclear weapons; devising and promoting policy options to control and eventually eliminate existing nuclear arsenals and fissile materials, and to stem their proliferation; preventing the massive release of radioactive material into the environment; and assessing and publicizing the full costs of being a nuclear-weapon state.
The Sustainable World program, which supports efforts to ensure that human activities do not erode the Earth's capacity to support living organisms by focusing on four inter-related themes: maintaining biological diversity; creating economic incentives and policies that will encourage environmentally sound development; developing energy resources that protect the climate; and avoiding contamination that undermines children's health.

Initial approaches for funding should be made via a Letter of Inquiry (2 pages max) describing the proposed project, its relevance to the goals of the Foundation, and the level of funding required. The Foundation can be approached for funding at any time of  year. Prospective applicants should also refer to the UWA internal guidelines Electronic Grants Guide.
