FAU to Host Events in Honor of Black History Month
BOCA RATON, Fla. (January 27, 2014) – Florida Atlantic University will celebrate Black History Month with a series of events throughout the month of February at its Boca Raton, Jupiter and Broward campuses. The events are free and open to the public, unless otherwise noted.
The following events will take place at FAU’s Boca Raton campus, 777 Glades Road:
Opening Ceremony
Wednesday, Feb. 5, noon to 1 p.m.
Traditions Plaza
Kick off the festivities with The Venus Rising Women’s Drum & Dance Ensemble while feasting on BBQ chicken, slow-smoked ribs, macaroni and cheese, baked beans, fire-roasted corn and dinner rolls. For more information, contact Juan Izaguirre at 561-297-3959.
‘Our Story’ Movie Night

‘Hate Crimes in the Heartland’

“Hate Crimes in the Heartland” is a film that explores the national conversation on race through the lens of two distinct hate crimes that took place in Tulsa, Okla.in 1921 and again in 2012. The documentary examines how hate crimes have come to be such a growing tragedy and trend, especially during the past decade. A reception will follow. Explore the history of the African Diaspora, during which Black people were forcibly relocated. This event will be a live timeline of the African people, from the early civilizations of West Africa (1400s) to slavery and the Reconstruction Era, Jim Crow and Civil Rights, and finally, the Post Civil Rights/Colorblindness era.
