Introduction

This section describes the course resources, goals, guiding principles, grading processes, and learning strategies. We hope it will give you a sense for our commitment to our collective effort to make the course a rewarding experience.

The source of our motivation is the thought that during your careers you will collectively make decisions that will affect the flow of billions of dollars of resources and the lives of countless individuals, and that the quality of these decisions can be improved, in part, by what you learn in this course.

Course Resources

  • Course Packet. It includes hard copies of this course map (syllabus), Navigating Accounting® (NA) chapters and excerpts, and select on-line exercises. No text book is required.

  • Navigating Accounting® videos, exercises, and related materials. Links to specific content will be indicated in this course map or in handouts. Here is the general web site:

http://www.navigatingaccounting.com/

  • Course Blackboard-Vista site. Electronic copies of course materials, videos, and class notes will be posted to BlackBoard-Vista:

https://cms.bc.edu

  • On-line forum. A series of BlackBoard-Vista blogs monitored by faculty where students earn credit and facilitate learning by posting: helpful responses to classmates’ questions, novel ways to learn course concepts, stimulating questions, insightful articles, or other materials that significantly enhance learning. There is a blog for each Navigating Accounting chapter and a general blog:

https://cms.bc.edu

  • Classroom Capture Echo videos. These videos record a good deal of the classroom activity (audio and anything projected on the screen) and you can easily navigate to parts of the class you did not fully comprehend. Go to the calendar in BlackBoard-Vista for the date/time of the class. See the video with tips under Resources on BlackBoard-Vista.

  • Microsoft Excel and Word. All BC students may install one copy of Microsoft Office (which includes Excel and Word) for personal use. Go to:

www.bc.edu/software/applications/office.html

  • i>Clicker. Clickers are required and available for purchase at the BC bookstore. Clickers are hand-held remote devices with buttons students press to respond to multiple-choice or true/false questions. You only need to buy one clicker, even if you have multiple classes requiring it. Bring your clicker to each class.

Before the first class session, you must register your clicker using BC’s Agora Portal. Go to Agora’s “My Services” and iClicker@bc. Do not change any of the pre-filled Information. If you do, your i>Clicker will be registered to the wrong person.

  • Intel’s 2011 annual report, which will be distributed during class. Bring it to each class.
