Fireworks Task Force On-Line Comments

12/20/07-1/3/08

  1. I beg you to reconsider the approval of certain types of firecrackers. These are the biggest violation of my right to a peaceful community. Flying objects do harm to property and indivduals. It is firecrackers that cause pets and animals to hurt and even kill themselves and disturb the right to live in a neighborhood that is free from intruding noise.

--Carl Prescott

  1. Fireworks should be legal in the state of Florida. It's something people of all ages love,,If anything should happen you should just make it that people over the age of 21 should be able to buy it but just don't ban it from others.HAVE A BACK BONE PEOPLE

--Steve S

  1. I have five grown kids. Four boys and one girl. Fireworks needs to be leagle. Because with the internet the kids are only going to make there own. And there in lies the hazard. Short fuses and improper mix of chemicals "homemade" can be leathel. Don't kid yourself your kids at one time or another will experiment. Wouldn't you rather your child lite a safe firework then a homemade bomb. I know to me there isn't a choice but please think before voting.

--James Roy

  1. I've been using fireworks for many years now, and the thought of them becoming outlawed in Florida is outrageous in my opinion. My holidays are spent in Florida, New Years as well as 4th of July, and my holidays are spent using fireworks. There are many beeches down there, and safety shouldn't be an issue beyond the publicís common sense. Becoming the "Big Brother" and protecting people from themselves doesn't sound like a Patriotic choice to me, might as well ban driving and swimming for that matter, there's far more deaths a year from either one of those activities then there is from fireworks. My comment is to request that 1.4G Consumer Fireworks remain legal in the state of Florida. Adjust the limitations if you must, but don't completely remove them from the public. Concerned Vacationer... PS. There's plenty more states out there to vacation in that do allow Fireworks.

  1. Florida Legislators will have to deal with FS 791 in 2008---Be aware that there are now thousands of citizens who are against any kind of legalizing of the aerial or exploding "consumer" fireworks(FYO:These fireworks are, and have been, illegal to use here in Florida). We are actively fighting this, and will continue until FS 791 is strengthened, and with solid and enforceable laws with stiff fines in place. We will not succomb to the pressures of a monied/powerful industry. Our quality of life, our safety, and our inalienable rights are much more important than a $-dollar sign. Let's get back to being Americans; with integrity, morals, and the highest standards in our leaders. God bless America!

  1. After years of setting off increasingly larger and more intense "consumer grade" fireworks, the problems lie in the lack of education and proper warning labels on the packaging which should make it clear about mixing different types of fireworks. For example, setting off mortars in close proximity to others mortars is not really dangerous but a lit fountain to close to mortars causes mass chaos if the unloaded mortars ignite, flying in random horizontal directions. I find myself much more comfortable with mortars and the larger fireworks because we all have a much greater respect for the power we are dealing with. What I take issue with are the bottle rockets and smaller junk often found in assortments. There always seems to be an element of creativity needed to make these enjoyable and with the aid of alcohol the ideas that come about become increasingly dangerous. The Beavis and Butthead rises from all of us.

--Chris Goertemoeller

  1. There is also misinformation over fireworks being illegal. The laws on the books should be repealed and the industry should be appropriately regulated if the officers are not going to enforce the laws on the books. I have had officers show up at my house both here in Florida and Kentucky. In both instances, my immigrant neighbors just couldn't fathom how we could get the fireworks we got and be allowed to set them off. Both officers were very polite and stated that they were there only to be seen since a complaint was made in the area and that we needn't worry. The issue here is that the legislation is not current with the views of law enforcement. Law enforcement is not asking for more weapons against the war on fireworks and if they are that would be rather two-faced. Correcting the legislation to reflect the real world would greatly reduce people calling in the "illegal use" of fireworks.

  1. Fire Marshalls and fire hazards, come on. Most fireworks are lit in the evening when humidity levels are above the red flag warnings. Now when it comes to firecrackers this is a serious concern since they are often played with earlier in the day when humidity level drop significantly especially in the winter, but to ban all fireworks because of naive drunks and kids getting a chuckle. That's absurd.

    • Chris Goertemoeller

  1. I enjoy my permanent fireworks store, Phantom Fireworks. I often go weeks in advance when the store traffic is light. For two reasons, one is to get their opinion on what their favorite ones are, and their professional tongue and cheek safety advice. It is greatly appreciated. I have also been to the temporary tents and the expertise is just not there. You can tell they are there for the quick buck. Due to the difference in service, I do believe a government brochure similar to an ARM mortgage disclosure when closing on an adjustable rate mortgage be required to be given to each customer at the expense of the merchant explaining the safe use of "consumer-grade" fireworks. And don't say the use of alcohol. Say the over-use or being intoxicated with alcohol and/or narcotics. Have some sense of the celebratory environment that accompanies these holidays and fireworks.

    • Chris Goertemoeller

  1. To those against the use of consumer fireworks, I am a long time shooter of consumer fireworks. My family and I enjoy them on holidays and many of my neighbors have complimented me on the holiday shows we have put on. That being said I will get to my point. Please use caution in trying to ban consumer well made pyrotechnic devices as there is a large demand for quality fireworks around holiday times. Proper use and education is vital for the general public and should be implemented as in driving, purchasing a gun or any other potentially dangerous situation. The products themselves are basically harmless if used in the proper manner. The media and political side lump any and all home made accidents on the holidays together and give the fireworks industry a bad name. Regulation is a good idea but over regulation will create an underground market that even I would not want. Responsible companies with educational materials and knowledgeable people is what the industry needs. Many of the accidents that happen are from misuse and not the actual items themselves. I hear guns going off on New Years eve all over the place and I live in a good neighborhood. So anohter question is which do you want that type of behavior or safe backyard use of consumer grade fireworks? The answer to me is simple. Please allow responsible people the privledge of shooting fireworks in the privacy of their backyards. Minors in no way should be allowed unless under the supervision of a competant adult. Please do not allow the misuse of a small group of people to jeopordize the rights of the responsible many. Thank you for your time. --Dave Vince

  1. The safe enjoyment of fireworks has been a tradition in my family as long as I can remember. I learned at a young age to handle and use fireworks properly. I have taught and continue to teach my children to be safe and responsible with fireworks. We even budget a small amount of money towards fireworks and spend responsibly. Another important lesson for my children. I support the fireworks industry!

--Don Gorman

  1. Just had to ask some neighbors this evening to stop with the fireworks and they were none too happy. The noise from the fireworks was disrupting a visit from Santa for several children in the neighborhood on Christmas Eve! Jeez, this really needs to stop and since regulating the actions of selfish individuals is futile, the only way is to force the exploiting businesses out of the state.

  1. Just thought you might be interested to know - it is Christmas Day and there are fireworks being set off in several directions around me. It happened Christmas Eve also. Please know that you cannot regulate how people use fireworks! You can only ban the sale of them to consumers! People have absolutely no consideration any more.

--Gladys Newton

  1. I believe that the use of commercial grade fireworks should be allowed. Many accidents do occur because of irresponsible use. "The other issue of bodily injuries is clouded with misinformation. The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that almost half of injuries to kids under five result from sparklers. It makes sense because too many parents hand those sticks burning at 1,000 degrees to their little kids to wave and run around with." This only proves that injuries occur when precautions are not taken. The saying goes that ëyou canít legislate stupidityí. I have purchased fireworks for years. My husband and I always have large "shows" during 4th of July and New Years and have taken the neccessary precautions to prevent injury to onlookers. The fireworks add a different element to our gatherings which everyone loves. If used properly, they would not be a nuisance. I do not want my freedom of using fireworks to be taken away. Furthermore, keep in mind that the consumer fireworks industry brings jobs and tax revenue to the state.

--Karol

  1. I support the sale of fireworks of all kind as long as the quality is maintained as i found in phantom fireworks ! My family and friends really enjoy celebrating the holidays and having fireworks is really the topping on the cake. It would be a real shame to make fireworks illegal dew to accidents which can be avoided if the proper precautions are taken. Fireworks make life just a little more enjoyable and should always be available to celebrate with family and friends. My 2 cents !

  1. The sale of the firewoks at Florida keys should be aloud as long as they are held responsible & ONLY sold to udults. You can probably order these fireworks on the internet anyways. It would be a shame if you can't even enjoy fireworks with your friends & family.

--David Nieves

  1. fireworks has been an American tradition as well as in other countries. The answer is not banning it because parents fail to properly supervise their kids. The answer should be stronger restrictions on the use and supervision from the parents.

--David Reyes

  1. As a native Floridian, I have never understood the state's reasoning for laws against the purchase and/or usage of fireworks. Many residents simply travel to other states where fireworks can be easily purchased. Yes I understand the inherent risks involved with these products. But it's time Florida realized the inability to protect its citizens from anything that involves a risk. It's time the state evaluated how resources can be better spent on improving the quality of life in Florida and spend more time in growth management of the state...something that has been sorely missing for as long as I can remember. I hope this task force looks at all aspects of this issue and legalizes fireworks statewide. Thank you. Brian A. Morris

--Brian A. Morris

  1. Fireworks have been a tradition in our country for many, many years. It would be a shame if we were not able to share with our children the excitement of a rocket blasting off from the ground and booming in the night sky with colorful blasts. There are plenty of us out there who have been responsible and will continue to practice firework safety. Please don't take this timeless pleasure away that we get to enjoy with all around for those two times a year.

  1. The fireworks industry has been bringing joy to not just american families but other families around the world. so if you take away fireworks you take away the joy and another right of citizens.

--David Dempsey

  1. Fireworks are a tradition here in Florida. My kids always enjoy them on Holidays and were taught to be very responsible with them. Just like another place that I use to live, if fireworks are not available here, people will get them somewhere else.

  1. Fireworks is a proud American tradition. Those who wish to make them illegal or wish to increase their regulation are attempting to to smash the American spirit. We have the God given right to buy and use fireworks. Leave my freedoms alone and mind your own life.

  1. I don't believe that we need any more "nanny state" initiatives to protect us from ourselves. If citizens want to celebrate New Years and 4th of July holidays with fireworks then let them do so. Regulate the importers to insure that fireworks conform to minimum reasonable standards of saftey IF USED AS DIRECTED ON THE PACKAGING (ie: light fuse and get away). Other than that, leave the issue alone.

  1. My family love Phantom Fireworks and enjoyed our experience with them. I think we all would hate to see them go out of buissnes.

  1. It is not the place of the governement to restrict responsible adult citizens from purchasing and enjoying pyrotecnics. The state of Florida should not overstep its powers in further restricting the voting public from exercising their freedoms in this matter. I am responsible for my actions regarding the choice to use fireworks in a responsible manner and am required to fill out a form declaring this responsibilty before I can purchase these products(from which the state recieves tax revenue). I consider it an infringment on my rights that any legislation to further regulate or outlaw the sale of fireworks. The legislature can spend its valuable time on the pressing matters of the state and leave me to responsibly enjoy a traditonal holiday display. To all of the killjoys who are behind this attempt I say that you must be morons to think the citizenry of Florida too stupid to realize that this is yet another attempt to take away the rights of voting adults under the guise of a "safety innitative". Get a life and leave the rest of us alone.

--Adam J. McDonough

  1. do not ban fire works in florida

--James

  1. I really don't think that you should ban fireworks. Fireworks are probably one of the most anticipated events of the year, besides christmas. What's a new year without fireworks? If it's because of conduct, then you can't just blame the general population; one person spoils it for all of us. I think that the morale of pretty much everyone and their grandmother will go down if fireworks are taken out from Florida.

  1. We want fireworks to continue to be sold in the State of Florida.

--Cesar Lelis

  1. do not band fireworks in Florida. I am a student who love the enviorment and hopes to one day study florida's habitat. I love fireworks because you can only use them 2 times a year. They help my family come together to celebrate. So just dont band fireworks!p pease dont. Thank you for your time.

  1. Fireworks are a USA tradition it should continue to be a part of our rights to celebrate our country by displaying fireworks!

  1. The Firework industry brings jobs and tax revenue to the state and companies like Phantom Fireworks have invested millions of dollars in the state of Florida. Please don't take away the freedom to purchase consumer grade firework. People who are irresponsible will always cause trouble, not only fireworks could cause fire, they are many other things for example cigarette, if your not responsible with that you could cause a fire. so to prevent fire cause by cigarette are you going to ban that too or you're going to try to tell people be alot more responsible. Thank you for your time

--Rick

  1. Do not ban fireworks from Florida. Fireworks keeps people alive. They bring wonder and a sense of magic to everyone's lives. They are a key part of celebrations and a wonderful accessory to traditions. I cannot imagine Jacksonville Landing without fireworks for the fourth of July, nor can I imagine New Years Eve without the firework display at my clubhouse. Fireworks make scenarios such as a New Years Eve kiss or Happy Fourth of July magical. Trust me- watching fireworks on the television, no matter how large and high-def it may be, is nothing compared to the real experience of being underneath the fireworks. You cannot see the special shimmer from a television, nor does your insides rumble with each boom. They light up a child's face like nothing before and make moments, even if they are short, untouchable. Please, without fireworks, Florida will be dark on New Years. I beg you not to ban them.

--Caitlin Pilapil

  1. This is not a good thing to do. Fireworks have been a tradition all around the world. Why stop them now? It's not going to improve anything.

  1. I feel that fireworks are as much a right of responsible adults and their children as the right to bear arms. To take away such rights is just wrong. I grew up in Kansas and Missouri as a child and celebrating the 4th and New Years was the best part of being a kid. To be able to put on a show for other family members to ooo and awwww at things was just the icing on the cake. When I moved to Arizona where there are NO fireworks for the public, it was the most awful thing to ruin my favorite holiday of the year. When I moved to Florida 3 years ago, I was reliving childhood memories along with making new ones not only for my daughter, but for my husband who was raised in Arizona with no childhood memories of great 4ths like mine. Now, that has all changed and it's become the best two holidays of the year that we all participate in. We always practice firework safety and set them off near water or in the street, so it's not ANY danger to the houses, especially when using sky oriented fireworks we try to make sure we do those only near water. Fireworks and fire safety are a responsibility that I enjoy teaching my daughter and hope she is able to teach her own children down the road, as long as bureaucratic nonsense doesn't prevent her from a happy lifetime of fireworks memories.

--Celeste Pavlich

  1. Please let it be known by all parties conserned that as a responsible consumer I've enjoyed the freedoms allowed to me as a free citizen of this nation to responsibly use the fireworks that Phantom Fireworks provides. To take away this freedom, in my veiw, is just another step in the direction of socialst governmental control. This concept should scare the shit out of any thinking person. As long as these products are used with care, they are as safe as any other products that should be used with care. Phantom never fails to provide the instructions for the safe care and use of all the products they distribute. Thank you for your time and consideration.

  1. Banning fireworks would be horrible. Fireworks are a tradition in my family going back almost a decade.

--Richard Camp

  1. Banning fireworks is wrong to us people. Every year we have been buying these fireworks and nothing has gone wrong. doing fireworks is tradition to all of us exspecially on fourth of july witch is imperative that we keep it open for people to celebrate special events that mean somethimg. us kids look forward to setting fireworks off in the air. If fireworks are banned more people will go to jail for breaking the law because no matter what happens there will be fireworks being sold under the table and well the way i see it is that you cant stop us from lighting them off plus there isnt enough cops to stop us witch sucks for them so weather or not fireworks are banned it isnt going to work so you might as well keep more people from going to jail over something so dumb.

--Aaron

  1. fireworks have always been part of American culture and celebration, and to take away our right to buy them legally will simply lead to another commodity on the black market

--Karl Fethe

  1. dont ban fireworks because how will family celebrate 4th of july and such without fireworks

  1. You can't ban fireworks in Florida. If you ban the fireworks in Florida, there will be absolutely no point in fourth of July. The reason we have fireworks is to remember the fight for our freedom. It states it in our countries national anthem, that there were bombs going off but our flag was still there. There is your symbolism right there. Now, I understand the risks of people hurting them self. But the risks do not outweigh the enjoyment we've had for over 200 years.

  1. Your cannot Ban fireworks. It's insanity. No one will have nothing to look forward to on New Years. Please do not ban the beauty of light sparks.
