Following your operation
-
Try to ensure you do not get constipated. Passing a constipated motion after an operation around the back passage (peri-anal area) is painful. Make sure you have plenty of fibre in your diet (such as wholemeal bread and fruit) and drink plenty of fluids.
-
You will be prescribed laxatives to take for the first one or two weeks after your operation if the surgeon considers it necessary.
-
Discomfort and a small amount of bleeding are common after peri anal operations. If pain relief is required take the prescribed medication. The pain and bleeding usually settle within one to two weeks of your operation.
-
If you have a wound that has been stitched, the stitches will dissolve in one to two weeks.
-
If you have an open wound, dressings by the district nurse/practice nurse will be arranged as necessary.
-
It is both safe and beneficial to wash the skin around the back passage once or twice a day. Gently pat the skin dry after washing. Avoid prolonged soaking and antiseptic solutions.
-
If a telescopic examination of the bowel has been performed at the same time as the operation you may experience some abdominal swelling and discomfort. This should settle within 24 hours.
If you have any anxieties or problems, please contact the Elective Treatment Centre on 0161 276 8688 or you may wish to make an appointment to visit your GP.
In the event of an emergency, please attend your nearest hospital Accident and Emergency department, calling an ambulance if necessary.
