UNIVERSITY NETWORKS

The Faculty of Economics is part of two international university networks:

  • the network HERMES (Higher Education and Research in Management 0f European Universities), that groups various European Universities (IECS-Strasbourg, Technische Universitat Dresden, Friedrich-Alexander-Universitat Erlangen-Nuremberg, Stuttgart of Management and Institut Technology, Eberahard Karls Universitat Tubingen, Uniwersitet Jagiellonski Krakow, Heriot Watt University Edimburgh...), in order to favour the activity of scientific and didactic collaboration at a European level, based on double diploma programs;

  • European Consortium EMBS (European Master of Business Science), within which programs of exchange are set up at specialist degree level. This leads to the attainment of the "European Master of Business Science". The following universities are members: University of Birmingham, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh, University of Reading, University of Wales (UK); ESC Brest, ESC Clermont Ferrand, ESC du Havre, Université Jean Moulin Lyon III, Group Sup de Co Montpellier, (France); Universidad de Cordoba, Universidad de Granada (Spain); Kracow University of Economics (Poland); Universitat Mannheim, Universitat Regensburg, Universitat Stuttgart (Germany); University of Southern Denmark, Odense (Denmark) and Universitat Wien (Austria).

The strategy of the Faculty within these networks is aimed at boosting bilateral relations with other universities. This will allow the addition of teacher exchanges and cooperation in the field of research to the simple exchange of students.

TEACHING MOBILITY

Within the various programs set up, didactics and research contacts between our teaching staff and foreign universities have been consistently increasing.

Within the Erasmus Program, the Faculty of Economics participates in a teaching mobility program with Poland (Prof Giancarlo Malvestito).

Within the Hermes network, an exchange with visiting professors from the IECS of Strasbourg (Prof Antonella Zucchella) has been established.

OTHER EUROPEAN PROGRAMS

  • Erasmus Mundus

Aimed at improving the quality of advanced education and at greater intercultural understanding by means of the cooperation with third party countries, Erasmus Mundus (www.erasmusmundus.it) is a program of collaboration and mobility that aims to promote globally the image of the European Union as center of excellence for learning.

The Program supports high quality university European second level courses (corresponding, in the Italian system, to specialist degrees and first and second level university Masters). The purpose of the program is to strengthen the visibility and the attraction of the European advanced education in the third party countries. Erasmus Mundus includes scholarships financed by the European Union destined to citizens of third party countries that participate in course that achieve the " EM label ".
The establishment of a Master’s program in ‘European Union and international economy’ is in progress at the Faculty of Economics. The program forms part of the Erasmus Mundus, and involves the universities of Barcelona, Montpellier, Tubingen, Nottingham and Budapest.
Head: Prof Guido Montani

  • EU - China Higher Education Cooperation Program

The Faculty of Economics is a partner in the EU-China European program. This aims to strengthen European studies in China.

Within the program, a number of researchers and teaching staff from the People's Republic of China have been received in Pavia for periods of research in the faculty. These stays have lasted between six months and - a year.
Head: Prof Antonella Zucchella

  • Tuning (Tuning Educational Structure in Europe)

The Faculty of Economics has participated in the European Commission’s Tuning program since its conception. The objective here is to implement the Declaration of Bologna (June 1999) and to develop common European diploma models, based on the motto: "Tuning of educational structures and program on the basis of diversity and autonomy". The first two parts of the program have been concluded, during the course of which the methodology to use in order to define a quality standard for the degree in business has been discussed; now the third phase of the process is about to get underway.

On 11 March 2005 the Faculty of Economics organized a meeting in order to outline the results of the first two phases, after which a report will be sent by mail and e-mail to the university Heads of Economics and to the chairmen of business degree courses at the Italian athenaeums.
The Faculty has contributed also to the translation of Tuning Guide, elaborating part of the Italian version of the final report of the first phase of the plan (Prof. Elena Montagna)2. In 2003, Prof. Zucchella replaced Prof. Violini in the role of representative for Italy in Business Studies.

Head: Prof Antonella Zucchella

Over the past few years, few Polish students have been received as part of the program.

COURSE PROGRAM:
the course is divided in two parts:

Part I: Time series models.

Difference equations and their solutions. Stationary time series models: ARMA models and model selection criteria. Deterministic and stochastic trends. Tests for unit roots (univariate and panel). VAR analysis: estimation and identification. Cointegration and error correction models.

Models with limited dependent variables : binary choice and multinomial models. Ordered, sequential and ranked outcomes. Censored and truncated models. Sample selection models

Models for panel data: fixed effects, random effects, random coefficients models. GMM estimation of linear panel models.

EDUCATIONAL AIM

The first part of the course will give an introduction to the time series models, and discuss the analysis of short-run and long-run behaviour with structural vector error correction models.

The second part of the course will focus on microeconomic data models. Analysis will be undertaken on both qualitative and panel data. Illustrative examples and data sets are taken from the finance and microeconomics area.
