USDA Forest Service, Southern Region (R-8) Kisatchie National Forest Calcasieu and Catahoula Ranger Districts
The Kisatchie National Forest will soon be filling two Forestry Technician (TSP) positions. Both of these opportunities are permanent, full-time positions with duty stations of Alexandria, Louisiana and Bentley, Louisiana. This notification is being circulated to inform prospective applicants of this upcoming opportunity. The primary responsibility of these forestry technician positions is to perform presale activities involved with the layout of timber sale areas, designation of trees for harvest, and execution of the Kisatchie National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan. This position will also be required to support fire management activities, including prescribed fire and wildland fire suppression. The Kisatchie National Forest is an exciting and rewarding place to work. KNF personnel are committed to ecosystem restoration with the fire-maintained longleaf pine ecosystem being a top priority. About the Calcasieu Ranger District The Calcasieu Ranger District is comprised of 187,000 acres divided in two units and prepares an annual sale target of approximately 40,000 ccf. The District has the Vernon Unit near Leesville, LA, the Evangeline Unit near Alexandria, LA, and the main District Office located in Boyce, LA. The duty station for this position will be at Evangeline work-center which is located approximately 15 miles southwest of Alexandria, Louisiana. About the Catahoula Ranger District The Catahoula Ranger District is comprised of 123,000 acres and prepares an annual sale target of approximately 23,000 CCF. The District office is located near Bentley, Louisiana, approximately 15 miles north of the communities of Alexandria and Pineville with populations of approximately 49,000 and 13,000, respectively. Commuting times to the District Office would be from 20 minutes to 40 minutes for Pineville and Alexandria. Pineville/Alexandria Alexandria/Pineville is a full service city with several four year Colleges and Universities, regional shopping opportunities including a mall, regional hospitals, a zoo, and a regional Airport with connecting service to Houston, Atlanta, Dallas and Memphis. Alexandria was named one of National Geographic's Top 100 Adventure Towns for 2012. The outdoor experience in Rapides Parish includes hiking, biking, canoeing, camping, and bird-watching in Kisatchie National Forest, or near area lakes. Housing is available with homes in the $60,000 to $250,000 price range. Rental property is also available with an average of $400 to $600 per month. There is no government housing available. Taxes within the state are generally low to moderate, and homestead exemption still exists. The overall cost of living would be considered moderate.
