HIP HOP: Beyond Beats and Rhymes. USA (2006) 60 minutes. Director: Byron Hurt. God Bless the Child Producers in association with Independent Television Service (ITVS) in association with The National Black Programing Consortium (NBPC). Courtesy of Byron Hurt.
As each generation expresses itself in a new music genre, hip-hop is the voice of today’s youth. Byron Hurt noticed that many of the rap music videos were identical. Guys in fancy cars threw money at the camera while scantily clad women danced in the background. The documentary tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia in today’s hip-hop culture. The film includes interviews with famous rappers such as Mos Def, Fat Joe, Chuck D, Jadakiss and hip-hop mogul Russell Simons. It explores issues such as women and violence in rap music and representations of manhood in hip-hop culture.
Official Selection Sundance Film Festival; Official Selection Urban World Film Festival; Official Selection Full Frame Documentary Film Festival; Official Selection Atlanta HIP HOP Film Festival; Official Selection HOT DOCS International Film Festival; Official Selection Roxbury Film Festival Audience Award.
After the film there will be a discussion led by Kast and Thobo about whether hip-hop reflects our society and/or other societies.
