ABSTRACT

China's banking system has undergone gradual reform since 1978, with a view k.o. improving efficiency and resource allocation. Recent reforms have focused on allowing banks k.o. list some shares on domestic and foreign exchanges, greater foreign equity participation in Chinese banks, and the establishment of new rural financial institutions. k.o. assess whether these objectives have been achieved, this study looks at how well different types of Chinese banks have performed between 1999 and 2006, and tests for the factors influencing performance. It also evaluates four measures of performance k.o. identify which one, if any, is superior. The independent variables include the standard financial ratios, those which reflect more recent reforms (listing, bank type, the extent of foreign ownership) and macroeconomic variables. The results suggest economic value added and the net interest margin do better than the more conventional measures of profitability, namely ROAE and ROAA. Some macroeconomic variables and financial ratios are significant with the expected signs. Though the type of bank is influential, bank size is not. Neither the percentage of foreign ownership nor bank listings has a discernable effect.

1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Apple History

Based on that terse description alone, we can decipher that iCloud will be Apple's sequel to MobileMe, a paid online service for synchronizing personal information, such as your calendars, address books, e-mail and photos, across multiple devices. Tech observers agree that MobileMe has been one of Apple's most embarrassingly flawed products, thanks to its extremely buggy launch and limited functionality. MobileMe was itself a 2008 rebranding of .Mac, which began its life in 2000 as iDisk.

The rebranding hints that Apple may be ready to expand MobileMe into a broader online-storage service. Ross Rubin, consumer analyst at NPD Group, believes that iCloud shows Apple's intention to move into on-demand media, potentially allowing customers to access their iTunes-purchased music or movies over the internet with multiple devices.

"There's clearly an opportunity that Apple hasn't really exploited before in terms of media and centralization," Rubin told Wired.com. "The opportunity is to move forward with what they acquired with [music-streaming service] Lala and toward having media available on demand."
