Harmonising a Melody for SATB

How to Mark
In order to effectively harmonise a melody for SATB you should

understand how to mark them.

Chords (10 marks)
1) Is there an appropriate cadence? * Perfect = V-I

* Imperfect = __ - V

* Plagal = IV – I

* Interrupted = V - __ (usually vi)

2) Check the roman numerals underneath each chord fit the given soprano line. (i.e. if a passage in C Major includes chord V and the note given in the soprano line is a C, it is incorrect)
3) Give 2 marks to each chord that is appropriate, i.e. fits the given soprano part and fits the cadence. Give 1 mark to a chord that is appropriate but is not quite suitable e.g. two 7th chords in a row, an inversion used in a perfect cadence (Vb – I), a second inversion used where it would be more appropriate to put the chord in root position or first inversion. See me if you are unsure. (Max 10 marks)

Part Writing
We have given a maximum of 10 marks (two for each chord) but this is not the final mark as we now have to deduct marks for bad part writing.
Deduct 1 mark for each chord that:
1) contains an incorrect note – a note that does not belong in that chord, e.g. F in a C major chord.
2) is missing a note from the chord – e.g. a C major chord that does not contain an E in any part. (Occasionally, the fifth can be omitted so if this is the case check with me!)
3) contains a doubled third in a root position major chord – e.g. a C major chord with two parts singing an E. (the chord can contain a doubled fifth or a double root but not a doubled third.)
4) contains a doubled leading note in any chord – e.g. B in C major.

5) contains unsuitable spacing between parts e.g. more than an octave between neighbouring upper parts and more than a 10th between the tenor and bass.

6) contains a note that is out of the range for that particular voice.

7) marks the end of a set of consecutive 5ths or octaves. Remember – if two parts are an octave/5th apart and both repeat the note in the next chord this is still a consecutive.

8) ends with one part leaping an unsuitable melodic interval – an augmented 2nd or 4th (also known as a tritone).
If a chord contains 2 part writing errors then no points can be awarded

Special Features
The above steps will give you a mark out of 10. However, two marks can be awarded for suitable non-chord notes e.g. passing notes, suspensions, and include a final tierce de Picardie in a perfect cadence in a minor key.
