FAQ
How much funding will I be awarded?
-
Post-Doctoral: $20,000/year; PhD: $10,500/year; Master’s: $8650/year; Undergraduate: $1125/year
-
Matching funds, equal or over the above amounts from supervisors are required
-
Funding is renewable upon satisfactory progress as determined by annual review
How many workshops do I have to attend?
While we encourage trainees to attend as many workshops as they can, we expect PhD trainees to attend all 4 workshops, Master’s trainees to attend 2 workshops, and undergraduate trainees to attend 1 workshop.
Do I have to complete an internship?
Yes, all trainees are required to complete an industrial internship. Trainees should spend 20% of their time in the program on internships. Details about available internship opportunities will be provided by their supervisor and the Si-EPIC program coordinator periodically but trainees should take the initiative to attend networking and recruitment events to boost their chance of landing an internship.
What is expected of me in the program besides internships?
Trainees should submit at least one design annually to a Si-EPIC foundry and contribute to the Canadian Si-EPIC library. They are also expected to be engaged in Si-EPIC related research (attend conferences and publish journal articles) and disseminate their research in the form of a short annual report and a 3 minute oral presentation. Most importantly, students should possess an enthusiastic mindset about research in silicon photonics.
May I apply if I am not a student at one of the 5 partner universities?
You may only apply to the program if your supervisor or co-supervisor is affiliated with one of the partner universities. However, we welcome you to participate in the Si-EPIC by attending the workshops.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
The Si-EPIC program was established in 2012 via funding from NSERC ($1.65M) for collaborative research in Silicon Photonics, an emerging field in optics and electronics. At the core of the program is a set of multi-day workshops on design and fabrication of silicon photonics devices and circuits. We currently have 25 trainees, from five of Canada’s leading research universities: The University of British Columbia, McMaster University, University of Ottawa, McGill University, and Université de Sherbrooke.
