5. (IN CLASS) There are signs on the canal banks in Grand Junction telling people to stay off. A questionnaire was sent to Grand Junction residents asking if people still used the canal banks for recreation. Of course, not all questionnaires were returned. Do you think the percentage of all Grand Junction residents that use the canal banks for recreation would be higher, lower or about the same as the percentage on the returned questionnaires?
6. (SOLUTION GIVEN) Have you ever used marijuana? This question is asked to a random sample of people. Do you think the percentage of all people that have used marijuana is higher, lower, or about the same as the results of the sample study?
7. (HOMEWORK) On October 2, 2007, on www.denverpost.com a poll question was asking if the Colorado Rockies Matt Holliday should be the MVP (Most Valuable Player). Do you think the percentage of all baseball fans that would choose Holliday would be higher, lower, or about the same as on www.denverpost.com ?
8. (ALTERNATE HW) A sample of 100 people are asked what their favorite fast-food restaurant is. The 100 people were all people having lunch at McDonalds. Do you think the percentage of all Americans that will choose McDonalds will be higher, lower, or about the same as compared to the sample results?
9. (IN CLASS) Suppose we wish to decrease the amount DUI accidents in the US. If you study US cities you will find a very strong relationship between the number of churches and the number of DUI arrests. That is, cities with a lot of churches tend to have a lot of DUI arrests. Do you think that we could cut down on the number of DUI accidents by simply getting rid of churches, explain.
10. (SOLUTION GIVEN) Does tutoring really help? In a study of college math students it was found that students who used tutors actually did worse on exams than students who had no tutoring at all. Do you think there is a simple solution for students to improve in college math, that is, simply get rid of all tutoring? Explain.
11. (HOMEWORK) A certain city has four hospitals. One hospital (A) is a large regional medical center with a great reputation. The other three hospitals (B, C, D) are small local hospitals. In a study in the percentage of patients dying in surgery is done. The percentage for hospital A is nearly three times as high as each of the other 3 hospitals. One possible reason is that hospital A does not deserve its reputation. Give another possible reason.
12. (ALTERNATE HW) In a study of professors at a prestigious university it was found that a much higher percentage of men were full professors as compared to woman. One possible is discrimination. Give another possible explanation.
