Notes

First letter denotes the gauge:


N = Narrow gauge (2'/610mm)

W = Broad gauge (5'6"/1676mm)

Y = Metre gauge (3'33/8")

Z = Narrow gauge (2'6"/762mm)


Second letter denotes the type of traction: (D)iesel
Third letter denotes the intended usage:
M = Mixed traffic

P = Passenger

G = Goods
The suffix numbers and letters indicate sub-classes and variants. A memo from the Executive Director Mechanical Engineering (Traction), Railway Board dated 14/03/02, advised of a revised diesel locomotive classification system. The letters remained unchanged but the suffix numbers/letters were given new meaning. The first digit after M. P, or G indicates the horsepower range; 3 for 3000hp and 4 for 4000hp. The letter after this digit will indicate additional horsepower above 3000 or 4000. For example:
A = additional 100hp

C = additional 300hp

F = additional 600hp
As an example, the WDM2Cs (rebuilt from standard WDM2s) will become WDM3As. The classification of existing WDM2Cs, WDP2s and WDG2s is to be changed. However, there will be no change in the nomenclature of WDM2s and WDP1s (no mention was made of any other classes). The target date for completing the changeover is 30.6.2002
