Course Description: The Exploring Computer Science course is a broad-based introductory class that uses both the UC Berkeley-developed Snap! educational programming language and the Python programming language to introduce students to computational thinking. Using the 100% browser-based tools, students will create interactive stories, animations, games, and more, while learning about mathematical and computational ideas. Student will read and share out the latest on technology news such as in technews.acm.org. Students will be exposed to and learn the following concepts: Computational Principles (Snap! & Python), Input/Output, Variables and Functions, Algorithms and Data, Objects, and Development Practices.
Materials: Notebook, pencils, pens, highlighters, access to computer and internet at home. BlowntoBits.pdf. SnapManuel.pdf (These documents can be found in Box cloud or piazza.)
Absence: Assignments missed due to excused absences must be made up within the same number of days as the number of days missed to have chance to get 100% (e.g. 1 excused absence = 1 day to make up work). The teacher is not responsible for reminding absent students about the homework assignment that are due. In addition, students are expected to copy the class notes from classmate. To copy notes from the teacher, you must come in during advisory or lunch to do so. Projects must be turned in the day your return. Quizzes/Tests must be made up within the grading period. Any late work within grading period will earn up to 60% of grade.
Grading: Students will earn points in the following areas:

Intro CS Personal Point Agreement

I, , understand that at the beginning of each semester I will receive 100 personal points, which is part of my total point total for the semester. I will be able to maintain my 100 points of “personal points” unless the any one of the following rules are violated:

Please initial each violation in the left hand margin as they are read in class.

  1. BE A NICE PERSON – Do NOT disrupt class (not taking notes, talking during lectures, horseplaying in lab, eating/drinking in class, inappropriate language, unexcused tardy, etc.)

  1. BE A GOOD STUDENT – Bring all class supplies to class (book, notebooks, pencil, pen, highlighter, or NOT bubbling in name on scantrons for tests and quizzes, usage of electronic devices for non-APCS purposes, sleeping in class, using bathroom during class*.)

  1. BE A NEAT PERSON – Do NOT leave trash in your area, pick up any existing trash in your area, place all lab equipment back in its original location, place computers back into laptop cart and plug in power adapters when you are done using the computer.)

*Each student will be allotted two “bathroom passes” per semester. If you still have them by end of semester, you can redeem them for extra credit.

The first violation of these rules will result in a 10 point deduction from your “personal point” total. Each successive violation will result in a deduction of points in a geometric fashion (i.e. second violation = -20 points, third violation = -40 points, fourth violation = - 80 points, fifth violation = - 160 points…).
It is therefore possible to have a negative “personal point” total which will be averaged in to your point total for the semester (i.e. severely damage your grade).
I completely understand the above violations and rules for Technology Policy Use and point deduction. Student Name: (print)
