JTC 1 SAC: Inaugural Meeting Executive Summary – 14/12/2012


After a successful JTC 1 Strategic Advisory Committee (JTC 1 SAC) Working Group meeting in November 2011, the JTC 1 SAC held its Inaugural meeting on Wednesday 14 December 2011. Through Standard Australia's interface with ISO/IEC JTC 1, the Committee will provide high level strategic and policy input on matter of national importance for the Australian ICT sector. At the meeting the Committee confirmed the Terms of Reference.

The Committee identified the following areas as matter of interest to the Australian ICT sector:



  • Cloud Computing

  • E-Health

  • Smart Infrastructure, including Sensor Networks and Smart Grids

  • Accessibility

  • Green ICT

  • E-Waste; and

  • Augmented Reality/Virtualisation



Communication strategy across the Australian ICT community

The Committee discussed the need for a communications strategy across the Australian ICT community in relation to the work of expert Australian Mirror Committees to JTC 1 and the JTC 1 Strategic Advisory Committee (JTC 1 SAC). The draft will be discussed at the next meeting.


JTC 1 SAC: Second Meeting Executive Summary – 24/02/2012


The JTC 1 SAC met on Thursday, 24 of February 2012 to further progress Australia’s engagement with JTC 1 after their inaugural meeting in December 2011.

The key matters under discussion included the following:


Cloud computing


CSIRO on behalf of the JTC 1 SAC will be submitting a proposal to Standard Australia to establish a new National Mirror Committee on Cloud Computing. The new National Mirror Committee will engage internationally with JTC 1 Sub Committee (SC) 38 - Distributed Application Platform Services. This important proposal has wide stakeholder support from the JTC 1 SAC and will position Australia well in international standardisation.

Communication strategy across the Australian ICT community


The JTC 1 SAC draft communication strategy was discussed in detail and a plan is being formulated to ensure effective engagement and communication between JTC 1 SAC, Australia’s JTC 1 National Mirror Committees and the wider ICT community.

Interactive schematic overview of Australia’s engagement with JTC 1


Standards Australia with assistance from the JTC 1 SAC has developed an interactive schematic overview of Australia’s engagement with JTC 1. This PowerPoint is available here the AGIMO blog. It outlines the work being undertaken in important areas such as cloud computing, smart grids, sensor networks and accessibility.

A brochure on JTC 1’s work in ICT standardisation


Recently the ISO/IEC released a 24 page brochure outlining the work of JTC 1 and provides a high level overview of international ICT standardisation. The brochure, titled 'The force multiplier for ICT innovation', can be downloaded from http://www.iso.org/iso/pressrelease.htm?refid=Ref1505

It covers five examples of the newest innovative and interoperable ICT solutions being developed within JTC 1. They include:



  • Smart cards

  • Bar codes and RFID

  • Information security

  • Biometrics

  • Cloud computing

New area of standardisation in IT Sustainability


JTC 1 has recently approved the establishment of a new Sub Committee, JTC 1 SC 39 – Sustainability for and by Information Technology. The committee’s scope is on standardization related to the intersection of resource efficiency and IT which supports sustainable development, application, operation and management aspects.

IT-030 ICT Governance and Management


Standards Australia was pleased to announce the re-constitution of its IT-030 ICT Governance and management. This important National Mirror Committee will mirror the work of JTC 1 Working Group (WG) 6, which Australia holds the International Convenorship and Secretariat.

JTC 1 SAC: Third Meeting Executive Summary – 12/04/2012


The JTC 1 Strategic Advisory Committee (JTC 1 SAC) met for the third time on Thursday, 12 April 2012.

The key matters under discussion included the following:


Cloud computing


Standards Australia is reviewing the proposal put forward by CSIRO on behalf of the JTC 1 SAC. Upon approval by the Standards Development Council a National Mirror Committee will be formally constituted to engage internationally with JTC 1 Sub Committee (SC) 38 - Distributed Application Platform Services.

The JTC 1 SAC nominated and endorsed a Cloud Computing expert to represent Australia at the JTC 1 SC-038 Plenary Meeting in May 2012 in Berlin, Germany.


Smart Grids


Standards Australia is currently working with the Australian Department of Resources Energy and Tourism and relevant stakeholders to prepare a roadmap for the development of Australian Standards to support the deployment of Smart Grid in Australia.

Australia an Observing Member for IT Sustainability


Standards Australia is now an Observing Member the recently established Sub Committee, JTC 1 SC 39 – Sustainability for and by Information Technology. The committee’s scope is on standardization related to the intersection of resource efficiency and IT which supports sustainable development, application, operation and management aspects.

Communication strategy across the Australian ICT community


The JTC 1 SAC have finalised a communication strategy to ensure effective engagement and communication between JTC 1 SAC, Australia’s JTC 1 National Mirror Committees and the wider ICT community.

IT-030 ICT Governance and Management


The newly re-constitution IT-030 ICT Governance and Management kicked off their meeting on 21 March 2012. This important National Mirror Committee will mirror the work of JTC 1 Working Group (WG) 6, which Australia holds the International Convenorship and Secretariat.

JTC 1 SAC: Fourth Meeting Executive Summary - 05/07/2012

Cloud computing


CSIRO's proposal to Standards Australia, on behalf of the JTC 1 SAC, has been approved and Standards Australia is in the process of constituting a National Mirror Committee, called IT-038 – Distributed Application Platform Services. This Australian Committee will engage internationally and mirror the work of JTC 1 Sub Committee (SC) 38 - Distributed Application Platform Services. The IT-038 Committee will position Australia well to ensure Australian stakeholder needs are considered in International standards development in this business critical area.

The JTC 1 SC-38 held their Plenary Meeting in Berlin, Germany in May 2012. The JTC 1 SAC sent an Australian representative who provided an update on the International work program and outcomes.


Augmented Reality and Virtuality Forum


The JTC 1 SAC has identified Augmented Reality and Virtuality as a key area of interest to Australia. The Australian mirror committee, JTC 1 SC 24 – Computer graphics, image processing and environment data representation are involved in developing standards internationally related to Augmented Reality and Virtuality.

Standards Australia will hold a forum on 'Augmented Reality and Virtuality' on 26 July 2012. The purpose of the forum is to bring together important and relevant stakeholders in this area and provide a platform for discussion about Australia’s needs and requirements for the development of Standards in this emerging area.

IT Innovation and JTC 1


The most recent June edition of the ISO magazine focuses on innovation and the work of JTC 1. IT standards act as an important driver for Innovation in revolutionizing industry, helping them address pressing challenges. Working Group on IT Sustainability


JTC 1 has recently approved the establishment of a new Sub Committee, JTC 1 SC 39 – Sustainability for and by Information Technology. The committee’s scope is on

standardisation related to the intersection of resource efficiency and IT which supports sustainable development, application, operation and management aspects.



A Working Group under JTC 1 SAC will be created to review the international work program.

Working Group on Sensor Networks


The JTC 1 SAC will also create a Working Group to review the international work program for JTC 1 Working Group (WG) 7 - Sensor Networks. The committee's scope includes activities in sensor networks such as the following:

  • Standardization of terminology;

  • Development of a taxonomy;

  • Standardization of reference architectures;

  • Development of guidelines for interoperability.

Next Meeting


The next JTC 1 SAC meeting is scheduled to take place on 15 October 2012.
