Kevin Biggar was a self-confessed couch potato, before he was transformed into a world record beating endurance athlete.
In 2003 the team of Kevin, and Jamie Fitzgerald, took part in a huge test of endurance - the 5,000km trans-Atlantic Rowing race.
Kevin had never rowed before and Jamie only joined the team 6 weeks before the race. They not only won, they set a new world record.
The pair then went on to achieve a much tougher challenge in 2007 – as the first ever kiwi team to complete an unsupported trek from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole – a 52 day, 1,200km journey on foot towing 160kg sleds in temperatures as cold as -40 degrees C.
Kevin has written two book about his exploits, the award winning ‘Oarsome Adventures of a Fat Boy Rower’ and ‘Escape to the Pole’.
He and Jamie also co-hosted TV series ‘First Crossings’ - now ‘Intrepid NZ’ - recreating the adventures of pioneering NZ explorers.
