The oldest varsity soccer program of any of the past and present Cape Atlantic League Schools is Millville; which had its first varsity year in 1965. At that time, there weren’t very many schools in all of South Jersey that were playing varsity soccer. Oakcrest installed its Varsity program a year later, in 1966, and it was Oakcrest that first participated in a conference / division; the South Jersey Soccer Association League. In 1969 the league split into North & South Divisions. It is the South Division where the future CAL schools played. Next came Bridgeton in 1970, Mainland Regional in 1971, Absegami in 1972, Vineland and Middle Township in 1974; although Middle did not join any league until the formation of the Cape Atlantic League for soccer in 1982. The South Jersey Soccer Association League became the South Jersey Conference in 1973. Holy Spirit came on board in 1976, as did Cumberland Regional in 1977, St. Augustine Preparatory in 1978; they went into the South Jersey Soccer Coaches Association, and Atlantic City established soccer as a club sport in 1978 and a varsity sport in 1979, entering the South Jersey Conference, South Division. In 1980, Lower Cape May Regional, Ocean City, and Wildwood Catholic had their inaugural Varsity Soccer seasons. The 10 - 12 - PAC says that there is no Divisional play in this year’s South Jersey Conference. Apparently there were a total of thirteen league games to be played this year. Prior to 1982, there was no Cape Atlantic League for soccer. Two Divisions (Conferences) were made up to form the first league. Division I held the nine schools that had constituted the old South Jersey Conference, South Division. These were Absegami, Atlantic City, Bridgeton, Cumberland Regional, Holy Spirit, Mainland Regional, Millville, Oakcrest, and Vineland. Division II was made up from six smaller, mostly non-league affiliated schools; the exception being St. Augustine Preparatory, which had been in the South Jersey Coaches Association Conference. The other five were Lower Cape May Regional, Middle Township, Ocean City, Sacred Heart (V), and Wildwood Catholic. The schools in each division played one another twice each to arrive at the division champions; Vineland in Division One and Ocean City in Division II. As more schools entered the league, the two conferences juggled schools back and forth to maintain parity. In 1983, Egg Harbor Township began varsity play and was placed into the bigger Division I and Ocean City was also moved up. Absegami was moved down to take Ocean City’s place in Division II. Bridgeton ended its 1983 season prematurely, due to dwindling numbers of players; forfeiting the last third of the season. In 1985, Bridgeton failed to field a boy’s varsity soccer team. Hammonton & Wildwood were added to Division II in 1986. In 1987, Buena Regional was added to Division II and Absegami returned to Division I. It is noted that in the Cape Atlantic League, the word Division meant the same thing as Conference, from 1982 through 1989. In 1989, the CAL replaced the division references with the designation of Conference. In 1991, the word division reappears; this time to divide the two conferences in half. Each Conference had a Division I & a Division II. But; there were only 19 CAL schools competing in boy’s soccer. The National Conference, Division II had only four schools. The divisional breakdown was as follows: American Conference, Division I = (5) - Absegami, Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Twp., Millville, Vineland. American Conference, Division II = (5) - Cumberland Reg., Holy Spirit, Mainland Reg., Oakcrest, Ocean City. National Conference, Division I = (5) - Bridgeton, Buena Reg., Hammonton, Lower Cape May Reg., Middle Twp. National Conference, Division II = (4) - Sacred Heart (V), St. Augustine Prep., Wildwood, Wildwood Catholic. From 1991 on, a school is required to play its division opponents twice and the other division within their conference opponents once, to make up the conference schedule. Sometimes these divisions will contain an uneven number of schools. The uneven divisions were temporarily remedied in 1992 with the addition of St. Joseph’s, (H) to the National Conference, Division II. The league as we now know it began to take shape. American Conference, Division I = (5) - Absegami, Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Twp., Millville, Vineland. American Conference, Division II = (5) - Cumberland Reg., Holy Spirit, Mainland Reg., Oakcrest, Ocean City. National Conference, Division I = (5) - Bridgeton, Buena Reg., Hammonton, Lower Cape May Reg., Middle Twp. National Conference, Division II = (5) - Sacred Heart (V), St. Joseph’s (H), St. Augustine Prep., Wildwood, Wildwood Catholic. Unlike the NJSIAA; which realigns all its member schools in four public and two non-public groupings annually, the CAL realigns every two years, without regard to public or non-public designation. Both organizations accomplish this using the enrollment of each school from grades 10 through 12. In 1993, the CAL abolished [OT] in All games involving two CAL schools, whether they counted toward the conference races, or not. This even included the CAL Championship Game. In 2004, the NJSIAA voted to have [OT] for all conferences and the CAL has [OT] again after an eleven year absence. The CAL was believed to have been the only conference in New Jersey not using [OT]. In 1996, Cape May Tech. was admitted to the CAL and placed into the National Conference, Division II. In 1999, Pleasantville came into the CAL, and at the same time, Wildwood disbanded its boy’s soccer program. Wildwood instead initiated a girls program. At the conclusion of the 1999 - 2000 CAL scholastic sports season, Cumberland Reg., exited the CAL and was admitted into the Tri-County Conference, Royal Division. For the 2000 - 2001 & 2001 - 2002 scholastic sports years, the CAL boy’s soccer alignment was as follows: American Conference, Division I = (5) - Absegami, Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Twp., Millville, Vineland. American Conference, Division II = (6) - Buena Reg., Lower Cape May Reg., Mainland Reg., Middle Twp., Oakcrest, Ocean City. National Conference, Division I = (5) - Bridgeton, Hammonton, Holy Spirit, Pleasantville, St. Augustine Prep. National Conference, Division II = (4) - Cape May Tech., Sacred Heart (V), St. Joseph’s (H), Wildwood Catholic. The next four years, from the 2002 - 2003 season through the 2005 - 2006 scholastic sports years, the CAL boys soccer alignment was as follows: American Conference, Division I = (5) - Absegami, Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Twp., Millville, Vineland. American Conference, Division II = (5) - Hammonton, Lower Cape May Reg., Mainland Reg., Oakcrest, Ocean City. National Conference, Division I = (6) - Bridgeton, Buena Reg., Holy Spirit, Middle Twp., Pleasantville, St. Augustine Prep. National Conference, Division II = (4) - Cape May Tech., Sacred Heart (V), St. Joseph’s (H), Wildwood Catholic. Beginning with the 2006 - 2007 through at least the 2007 - 2008 scholastic sports seasons, the CAL boys soccer alignment will be as follows: American Conference, Division I = (5) - Absegami, Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Twp., Millville, Vineland. American Conference, Division II = (5) - Hammonton, Lower Cape May Reg., Mainland Reg., Oakcrest, Ocean City. National Conference, Division I = (5) - Bridgeton, Buena Reg., Holy Spirit, Middle Twp., St. Augustine Prep. National Conference, Division II = (5) - Cape May Tech., Pleasantville, Sacred Heart (V), St. Joseph’s (H), Wildwood Catholic. In 2006, the Cape Atlantic League did away with the CAL Championship Game. This was done; because, the NJSIAA had a problem with the game and they decided that it was another tournament, in violation of NJSIAA regulations that only allow for one other tournament, if a school is to remain eligible for the NJSIAA State Tournament. A new school, Cedar Creek entered the CAL in 2012. Sacred Heart closed its doors in June of 2013 and Hammonton left the CAL for the Tri-County Conference in 2014. Atlantic County Tech. entered the CAL beginning with the 2013 fall varsity season. The league realigned once again. The two divisions within each conference have been done away with. The 2014 conference alignments are as follows: American Conference = (10) - Absegami, Atlantic City, Bridgeton, Egg Harbor Twp., Millville, Vineland. Mainland Reg., Oakcrest, Ocean City, & St. Augustine Prep. National Conference = (10) - Atlantic County Tech., Buena Reg., Cape May Tech., Cedar Creek, Holy Spirit, Middle Twp., Lower Cape May Reg., Pleasantville, St. Joseph’s (H), & Wildwood Catholic. In 2014 each school in the conference will play one another once to arrive at the conference champion. Additionally; each school will also play five games with teams within their conference which will not count toward the conference title; but, will fill out the required minimum of thirteen games now required to qualify for the NJSIAA State Tournaments. It will be the first scheduled game vs a conference opponent that will count via the CAL master schedule, not necessarily the first dated scheduled game. It has become increasingly difficult to schedule out of conference games that don’t end up getting cancelled due to the weather, post season tournaments, etc.. This does not preclude a school from scheduling out of conference if they so desire and can find such opponents.
