Macduff lifeboat gala 2017
Four lifeboats, a visit from the Coastguard search & rescue helicopter, live music and the crew BBQ are just some of the attractions at the Macduff Royal National Lifeboat Institution Gala Day.
Macduff RNLI lifeboat station will be holding its biennial gala day on Sunday 20 August 2017. The event which raises funds for the charity will take place on Macduff Harbour and in the Fish Market.
Volunteer Derek Mair, who is helping organise the gala said: 'we have been working hard since the beginning of the year to organise our fundraising event. The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea and is funded entirely by public donations. Any money we raise from our gala day is used to support our lifesaving work along the coast around Macduff.
‘I’d like to thank all the businesses and boat owners who have made donations to us so far, we are still accepting donations of raffle prizes and bottles.‘
Coxswain Chassey Findlay said: 'as well as our B-class lifeboat, Lydia Macdonald which will be displayed on the harbour with her launch vehicle, we will be welcoming our flank stations, Buckie and Fraserburgh lifeboats to Macduff. The last all-weather lifeboat to be stationed at Macduff, Douglas Currie will also be in the harbour for the day.
Visitors will be able to go onboard, meet the crews and look at the lifeboats'
There will be a range of fundraising stalls in the fish market including, bottle stalls, home bakes, gin & whisky trail, face painting and the raffle which has a first prize of £300.
As well as the legendary crew BBQ on the harbour, this year we will also have the new Bistro 804 food area in the fish market where visitors will be able to enjoy soup, sandwiches, fine pieces and drinks.
Outside on the harbour, members of our Community Safety team will be carrying out free life jacket safety checks. They will be offering advice and information to those who use the coast and sea for work or leisure.
Mike Rawlins, Community Safety Officer at Macduff lifeboat station said: ‘At our last gala in 2015, our Community Safety team checked over 50 life jackets and found 6 that would not have worked if the person wearing it had entered the water.’
‘It is vitally important that anyone going in to or on the water for work or leisure has the correct life jacket or personal floatation device (PFDs), our Community Safety team will be able to offer advice on the correct equipment you should have for you activities.
I would urge anyone who uses life jackets and PFDs to have them checked out at the gala. A simple five minute check and chat with the Community Safety team could save your life.’
Volunteers from HM Coastguard Banff station will be joining us for the day. They will have their vehicle on display along with some of the equipment they use.
The HM Coastguard search and rescue helicopter 951 from Inverness will also be doing a fly past during the day.
