BIOGRAPHY

In 2008, composer Matthew Peterson left North Dakota on a Fulbright Grant to Sweden. Since then, the Stockholm-based freelancer has explored frontiers of sound and expression in over sixty works featuring vivid orchestrations, rhythmic vibrancy, expressive clarity, and emotional depth. His expansive output ranges from a chamber opera based on Wisconsin court cases, to modern settings of sacred texts, to stunning orchestral soundscapes.

Peterson’s work has received international awards and accolades including grand prize in the 2014 Uppsala tonsättartävling, the 2014 ASCAP Rudolf Nissim Award for best orchestral work, two BMI student composer awards, and the 2014 Fort Worth Opera Frontiers Festival award for chamber opera.

His music has been commissioned and performed by musicians and ensembles across Europe and North America, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Uppsala chamber orchestra, Gävle Symphony, Nordiska Kammarorkestern, & Vanemuine Symphony; chamber ensembles Norrbotten NEO, InnoVox, Third Angle Ensemble, Freya String Quartet, & Boston Percussion Group; vocal ensembles Chanticleer, Tartu University Chamber Choir, & Vocal Essence; and opera companies Fort Worth Opera & Opera Vista. Matthew’s orchestra music has been broadcast across the United States on American Public Media’s Performance Today, and across Sweden on Sveriges Radio P2.

Peterson holds degrees from the Gotland School of Music Composition (frikonst artist diploma), Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (M.M.) and St. Olaf College (B.M.). He previously served on the faculty of Indiana University ,the Gotland School of Music Composition (Visby, Sweden), and Lilla Akademien Musik Gymnasie and Pre-college. He is an avid hunter and fisherman, and lives on the island Lovö outside Stockholm.
