Atlanta, GA --- “You didn’t misread that headline,” says Camille Russell Love, City of Atlanta Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs. “Women participated in the Civil War in many more ways than most people realize, some even disguising themselves as men in order to fight. Noted author and historian Dr. Elizabeth D. Leonard is coming to the Atlanta Cyclorama to share some great stories and to talk about her book, All The Daring of the Soldier. Her presentation will be a revelation to most people who think the women of that era were all home cooking and darning socks! If you enjoy learning about history, belong to a book club, or want an interesting “ladies night out,” join us for this FREE event at 6:30 pm on Thursday, August 22.”
All the Daring of the Soldier: Women and the American Civil War
Presentation by Dr. Elizabeth D. Leonard, Professor of History at Colby College
Thursday, August 22 at 6:30 pm
This event is FREE and open to the public.
Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
Conventional wisdom tells us that the role women played during the Civil War was that they patiently waited to eagerly tend to the physical and psychological needs of their husbands, brothers and fathers as they returned home from war. This notion, while true for some women, was not the reality for many. In her book, All the Daring of the Soldier, Elizabeth Leonard debunks the myth that women, African American and white, did not contribute directly to the war effort. Her extensive research in archives and memoirs found that like their male counterparts, these women sacrificed family life and risked their lives for the Confederacy and Union alike. Not only were they nurses, but many fought in battle and served as spies. Moreover, many women just wanted the thrill and adventure war offered. Join Dr. Leonard as she talks about these women and shines a light on one of the Civil War’s best kept secrets.
Dr. Elizabeth D. Leonard is the John J. and Cornelia V. Gibson Professor of History at Colby College where she has taught since 1992. Colby College, located in Waterville, Maine, is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges in the United States. Dr. Leonard is the author of three Civil War era books: Yankee Women: Gender Battles in the Civil War, All the Daring of the Soldier: Women of the Civil War Armies, and Lincoln’s Avengers: Justice, Revenge, and Reunion after the Civil War. She is currently working on a fourth book dealing with black soldiers in the US Army between the end of the Civil War and the end of the Indian Wars. She is the proud mother of two wonderful sons, Anthony (14) and Joseph (12).
