Learning Unit 3: Word Exercise

Microsoft Word: Practice Exercise (Optional)

For this exercise, you will need to copy the title and two paragraphs below and paste them into a blank Microsoft Word document. You will then revise these paragraphs in your new Word document, as directed in the Assignment Instructions below.
All about computers

A computer is a device capable of performing a series of calculations or logical operations without human intervention. The abbacus and the desk calculator had limited calculating capacities, the computer is characterized by the number and complexity of operations it can perform and by its ability to process, store, and retrieve data. Computers developed along two separate engineering paths, producing too distinct types of computer—analog and and digital.

Advances in the technology of integrated circuits have spurred the development of smaller and more powerful general-purpose digital computers. Not only has this reduced the size of the large, multi-user “mainframe” computers, which in their early years were large enough to walk through, to that of large pieces of furniture but it has also made possible powerful, single-user personal computers and workstations that can sit on a desktop. These, because of their relatively low cost and versatility, have largely replaced typewriters in the workplace and rendered the analog computer inefficient. Computers come in a variety of styles.

Assignment Instructions:

Copy the title and two paragraphs above and paste them into a blank Microsoft Word document. You will revise these paragraphs in your new Word document as directed:

  1. Choose and apply an appropriate theme from the choices available

  2. Set the margins using the “Moderate” margin setting

  3. Set the line spacing of the entire document to 1.5 lines
(You will need to select all the text before applying this option.)

  4. Make the following changes to the top line or title, which says “All about computers”

  1. Change the font to “Calibri”

  2. Change the font size to 14 point

  1. Set the First Line indent to 0.5" for the first paragraph (don’t just simply tab over)

  2. Set the Hanging indent to 0.5" for the second paragraph

  3. Copy the following information (regarding analog and digital), and paste on the line between the two paragraphs in your document. Make these a bulleted list (there will be two bullet points).

Analog: Transmits sound waves from an electrical signal on a wire to a magnetic signal. Recording something on a tape is an example of analog recording.

Digital: The electrical signal is converted and represented as binary digits that can be sent to a computer.

  1. Find and Replace text:

  1. Replace all instances of the word “computers” with the words “thinking machines”; replace only the plural form of computers; it should find six replacements

  2. Use the Thesaurus in Word to find the first synonym for “intervention.” Replace all instances of the word “intervention” with that synonym.

  3. Use Find and Replace to replace all instances of “. ” [a period followed by two spaces] with “. ” [a period followed by one space], which is correct for electronic documents.

  1. Place your cursor on the line after the last paragraph and press the Enter key once.
Insert a 3 X 3 table on that line with the following data:

Columns 1-3 heading text: Mainframes

Desktops

Laptops

Text in two rows under “Mainframes” column: Large computers

Many users

Text in two rows under “Desktops” column: Personal computers

Type the Word Count on that line (not in the Footer)

Format should be as follows: Word Count: 000

  1. Save your completed Word file as your last name in all lowercase letters.
(For example, Janet Learner would save her file as “learner.docx”)

  2. Now, open the exercise key, and compare it to your finished document. If anything is not the same, try to find where your error(s) were made and attempt to correct them. Review the assigned readings and tutorials. If you are still unable to determine how to do any part of the exercise, you may submit your completed Microsoft Word document as an attachment to the appropriate spot by the exercise due date (see Course Schedule). Be sure to include your specific questions in the Assignment’s message area. If you are successful in creating a document identical to the exercise key, then you’re doing fine and do not need to submit the optional exercise.
