Starlight Concert at Mission San José
It’s coming again – “Music Under the Stars.” Mission San José will provide the magnificent setting for this free musical evening. Pack a picnic and come enjoy a family “pops” concert at this historic San Antonio treasure known as the “Queen of the Missions.”
USAA, Los Compadres and the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park will sponsor “Music Under the Stars” on Friday, May 11, 2007, at 7:30 p.m. on the grounds of Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo. The popular annual concert attracted over 1,200 concertgoers last year.
USAA instrumentalists and vocalists will perform this concert, which includes a wide variety of music for all ages – nostalgia, jazz, swing, Broadway, and of course, patriotic. Included on stage will be the USAA Jazz Band, Concert Band, and Chorus. The USAA musical groups are composed predominantly of USAA employees who volunteer their time to rehearse and perform at numerous functions throughout the year. The singers and instrumentalists come from all areas of the insurance and financial services association and enjoy sharing their talents and skills with thousands each year in San Antonio area performances.
Enjoy the Big Band sounds of the USAA Jazz Band as they play standards such as “Fever” and “You’re Nobody ‘til Somebody Loves You.” Exciting highlights from “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest,” and some “Irving Berlin Showstoppers” will be features of the USAA Concert Band. And, the stirring voices of the USAA Chorus will be heard in selections that range from great Broadway melodies to moving patriotic songs.
All concertgoers are asked to bring blankets or lawn chairs for their listening comfort. Picnic baskets are welcomed, as there will be no refreshments available. Parking with on-site security is available at Roosevelt Avenue and New Napier Avenue.
Los Compadres is the official Friends’ group to the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park. Los Compadres has raised more than $3.5 million for preservation, rehabilitation, development and education projects at the missions. USAA is a founding member of Los Compadres and has provided support to the organization since its inception in 1983. That support has included assistance from volunteers as well as financial support from USAA and The USAA Foundation.
Congress created the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in 1978. The missions are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there is no admission charge.
