2017-2018 National APAWLI Signature Program Application
Share in the opportunity of being an Asian American and Pacific Islander woman leader with a toolkit of insights, knowledge, and skills for your continued leadership journey.
The Center for Asian Pacific American Women (The Center) is now accepting applications for its signature leadership program - the Asian Pacific American Women’s Leadership Institute (APAWLI), which seeks to promote leadership of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) women in the corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors by fostering the development of AAPI women as whole person leaders. For more than 20 years, and having graduated over 150 women, the APAWLI Program has provided a unique opportunity for AAPI women to gain valuable technical skills to advance in the workplace; develop a clearer understanding of their leadership strengths, assets, and gifts; understand the influence of culture on their leadership and in their relationships; learn and practice balance while traversing the ups and downs of leadership and transitions; and become connected to a growing network of women who are constantly striving to improve the institutions,, families, and communities in which they work and live.
The Center will select 12-16 AAPI women throughout the country (APAWLI fellows) who have 8+ years of work/community experience and who are already acknowledged within their communities as talented high achievers and role models. Applicants must possess the personal responsibility for their own self-development and the public responsibility for bringing teamwork, diversity, equality, and opportunity to their companies, organizations, communities, and families.
APAWLI fellows will convene for three sessions over a seven-month period. Each session will focus on specific areas of leadership development. The first session focuses on improving yourself at the personal and individual level, and includes topics related to cultural identity, integration of the physical health and mind, and the qualities and characteristics to lead from within. The second session turns to the interpersonal, focusing on strengths, skills and qualities in order to navigate workplace/community environments, especially during the ups and downs of leading others or facing challenges in your career. The third session moves to the institutional and the power, authority, and influence needed to make change at the societal level. In that third session, participants come full circle in their leadership journey to celebrate where they have been and to identify their next steps as they move beyond the Program. Graduation from the program requires attending all three sessions in their entirety.
Benefits of the program also include:

  • Individual and tailored coaching throughout the seven months;

  • An opportunity to impact social change and demonstrate leadership through the identification and guided completion of a learning project that impacts at least 25 people

Tuition covers APAWLI fellows’ lodging and most meals, but not travel. Fellows will be responsible for their own travel expenses. Tuition for the Program is $9,200 and must be received prior to the first session unless an alternate payment schedule has been previously agreed upon. Limited number of partial scholarships for tuition and travel are available upon demonstrated need.
Class and training session dates are as follows (may be subject to change):

1. Session I (INDIVIDUAL): October 18 – 20, 2017, Seattle, WA

The journey begins with the foundational aspects of whole-person leadership. The first session focuses on building a strong foundation - physically, mentally, and emotionally - in order to self-reflect on past personal and professional experiences and take on the obstacles in your career and society.

2. Session II (INTERPERSONAL): January 31 – February 2, 2018, San Francisco, CA

As whole-person leaders, AAPI women embrace opportunities and face unique challenges navigating their workplaces, families, communities, and pursuing their own personal and professional dreams. Moving beyond the individual, the second session explores tools, strategies, and skills necessary to excel through these ups and downs and the pressures and expectations from the outside world.
3. Session III (INSTITUTIONAL): April 11-13, 2018, Washington, DC

As a critical component of whole-person leadership, AAPI women often do not arrive in their current situations without being connected to or standing on the shoulders of women before them. This session focuses on reaching the summit and traveling beyond to engage with the history and cross movement building work of AAPI women from around the country and the globe.

Expectations of Participants:

  • Participants must attend all scheduled sessions.
