Ndigbo in Atlanta Celebrates 2013 Igbo Day in Style

The Annual Igbo Day festivities were celebrated by Ndigbo in Atlanta Georgia joined by other Nigerians and friends. This year’s celebration offered the Igbo Community in Georgia another opportunity for fund raising geared towards the implementation of some of its ongoing developmental projects most notably the parking lot development at the Igbo Community Building in Mableton Georgia, an Atlanta suburb. The event also attracted other personalities from different states in the U.S. The Chairman of this year’s event was Prince M.O Agurd who along with Mrs Agurd rose to the occasion with a remarkable and generous donation. Many other guests also supported the Igbo Union project with significant donations, including Prof.&Mrs. Charles Ume, Mr.& Mrs.Victor Ugo, Chief and Mrs Chris Ogbuefi, Prof. Augustine Esogbue, Dr. Patricia Obiefule and many others. Special appreciation to Dr. Nwachukwu Anakwenze, the Chairman if Igbo World Assembly and Ohaneze Ndigbo Diaspora Chair, who came all the way from California for the event. The list of donors is very long indeed; we have to thank everyone who made contributions to the ongoing projects of Igbo Union Atlanta. The total amount raised at the event has not been released by Igbo Union leaders at the time of this report. The President of Igbo Union Atlanta, Sir Victor Anyanwu welcomed everyone to the occasion and the traditional Igbo ceremony of the “Breaking of the Colanut” was performed. The Chairman of the occasion Prince M.O Agurd a long time friend, demonstrated his vast knowledge of Igbo custom by invoking Igbo proverbs and idioms often used during the breaking of colanut ceremony. Igbo Girl’s Youth dancers entertained the guest with their traditional dance obviously their mastery of Igbo dance and culture has continued to grow in sophistication every time they perform; great work by their coaches. The rich traditional drums of the Igba Enyi from Nibo in Anambra State provided authentic drum music very familiar to many of us. The melodious drum beat simply invited the listeners to get up and dance which many indulged in. Certificates of award and appreciation were presented to Igbo Union executives and others for their selfless services to the organization. Tasty dinner was served to everyone and the drinks bar had plenty of wines, cocktail and exotic beer as well. The MC for the event Mazi Eddy Okwaraoha one of the best for the Nigerian community did an exceptionally good job combining fundraising and entertainment. In closing I have to say that the President and Igbo Union executives served very well in my view, as they leave office early in the first quarter of 2014, Ndigbo in Atlanta are looking forward to a new administration to lift the bar to an even higher level. There are many capable hands within and outside the current leadership circles from which the new president of Igbo Union Atlanta may be chosen. In future I will do a profile of those that may emerge as the new leaders of the Organization in the first quarter of 2014. I know I have to be careful so as not to step on a land mine here (Hahahahaha).
