Two types on the edge of extinction

At the beginning of 2010 only 34 Il-62s remained operational: Russia (21), Kazakhstan (3), North Korea (4), Cuba (2), Ukraine (2), Sudan (1) and Libya (1). Most are all aircraft used for governmental flights.

Recent photos on Google Earth show only three Il-86s left on the Tashkent aprons plus one more in process of being scrapped. As Uzbekistan Airlines failed to sell any of their ten Il-86s one might assume that six already have been scrapped. This is supported by the fact RussianPlanes.net reports UK-86012/16/52/53/57/72 all being scrapped.

Anyhow, the days of the Il-86s are numbered with only Atlant Soyuz and Donavia operating three aircraft each during the Christmas holiday season. Both airlines have parked them up since mid-January stating they might be in service for this summer's holiday season for flights to Sochi, Turkey and, if permitted, Egypt although it is expected to be their last year of service. Anyhow, including the six Uzbekistan aircraft now assumed as having been scrapped, the number of broken up Il-86s is at least sixty.

The future of Soviet Transports in the UAE

The An-12 is again banned from the UAE's airspace by the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Even technical stops and flights over UAE territory are prohibited, a full bann, in other words. The move, became effective from 1st March 2010, is aimed at raising safety standards in the country's civil aviation sector and was made after the GCAA set up a special technical committee to determine the airworthiness of foreign aircraft flying to the UAE airports. The technical committee conducted a technical audit on Antonov Design Bureau, the design organisation in Ukraine for An-12 aircraft and also assessed the civil aviation administration system in Ukraine. The audit showed that the aircraft does not meet all of the international safety standards. The GCAA started applying an advanced program which particularly allows the assessment of aircraft registered in foreign countries in order to ensure their safety and airworthiness. Pending the results of the assessment by the technical committee regarding the airworthiness of An-12 it showed that this aircraft can not be operated safely the GCAA concluded.

Adding to this we have receive the word that the GCAA is going to close all flights based on Russian built aircraft operating under any form of ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance, insurance) contract. The info received also states the next type that will suffer from a total ban in the UAE will be the Il-76. The authorities nowadays require to have a third party insurance for 650 million Dollar for aircraft from 50 to 200 tonnes. This is coming around 50,000 US Dollars per month that makes operation of Ilyushins financially impossible. Also both Russian MROs (maintenance, repair and overhaul) here are closed by GCAA which pushes operators to do the maintenance outside of UAE. As such nowadays the situation for Soviet built types in the UAE looks really dramatic.
The Iranian military Il-76 population

In January 1991, 15 Iraqi Il-76s were flown to Iran to escape the attacks of the first Gulf War. Of these 15 aircraft, 10 were put into service with the IRIAF (serials 5-8201/10) and the remaining five Il-76s went to the IRGCAF (serials 15-2280/84). No serials higher than 15-2284 have ever existed and are probably based on 'mis-poles' which is not difficult to understand. The Air Force operates them with the 73rd Transport Squadron at the 7th TFB at Shiraz, having 5 active Il-76TDs, 1 stored Il-76TD & 2 stored Il-76MDs. One former AEW conversion remains stored at Tehran and one aircraft crashed. The IRGAF operates three Il-76TDs from Tehran, one sits scrapped at Mashad and one crashed.

The three operational aircraft (15-2282/3/4) are all contracted to undergo an overhaul in Russia in 2010; As such the Iranian Il-76 fleet review now is as follows and all aircraft reported with their latest sighting. Surprising is the c/n given for 15-2282 which was reported in an on line crash report at http://www.aerospacetalk.ir/vb/showthread.php?t=29259 as being the c/n for the crashed 15-2280. However, we have received documents showing 15-2282 is c/n 0063471155 permitting it to fly to Russia for overhaul where it arrived at Zhukovsky by mid February. However, we have received documents showing 15-2282 is c/n 0063471155 permitting it to fly to Russia for overhaul, where it arrived at Zhukovsky by mid February. Still, who can guarantee 15-2282 did not make use of the identity of 15-2280, considering all Iraqi aircraft left Iraq in a hurry, probably not taking their complete paperwork with them.

The total times and numbers of cycles as given below was as per 19mar05!

Anyhow - in total 41 Il-76s were delivered to Iraq - 15 ended up in Iran, 1 crashed, 1 was left in Iraq, 20 are known to have returned to Russia. As such, for YI-ALU, YI-ANA/C/G/H/J/K/L/M/N/O we have no fate. Of these 11 aircraft, 7 ended up in Iraq and of 4 we have no clue what happened to them. Some, if not all four, might have been destroyed during the first Gulf war as possibly they were unable to fly at the moment the rest of the Iraqi fleet sought refuge in Iran. Anyhow, they have not turned up anywhere else and we have no unaccounted airframes outside of Russia since 1991. Also, the full 1997 Il-76 production list we received from the Ilyushin Design Bureau makes no mention of any of these 11 aircraft having found a new owner outside or within Iraq. For full details on the individual aircraft see the on line database.
