The centers are located at the Richmond Economic Development Corporation (REDC) in Richmond and Old Dominion University in Norfolk. “Women’s History Month gives us an opportunity to honor women small business owners and entrepreneurs, as well as the many resource partners we have in our region to help them succeed,” said SBA Mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Natalia Olson-Urtecho. “Our Women’s Business Centers enable women entrepreneurs to not only start their businesses, but to guide them in scaling and growing their operations to increase their market share.” Women’s Biz, Virginia, hosted by REDC, serves businesses located in central and southside Virginia, including Richmond and Petersburg. The Women’s Business Center in Norfolk is the newest addition to the Old Dominion University Business Gateway (ODUBG). It complements other services provided by the SBA Veterans Business Outreach Center, Hampton Roads Procurement Technical Assistance Center, Professional Development Center and the Technology Applications Center, targeting women entrepreneurs in the Hampton Roads region. The centers offer one-on-one counseling, networking events, training workshops, technical assistance, and mentoring to women interested in starting and growing their businesses. SBA Women’s Business Centers represent a national network of more than 100 educational centers designed to assist women in starting and growing small businesses. The centers offer management and technical assistance through comprehensive training and counseling on a variety of business topics. There is also a SBA Women’s Business Center in Springfield, Va., which is overseen by the SBA Washington Metro Area District Office. “Delivering the right resources to this rapidly growing segment of our business community is critical to Virginia’s efforts to create jobs and strengthen the economy,” said Kathy Dolan, women’s business representative for the SBA’s Richmond District Office. “The opening of these two women’s business centers is the first step in our office’s efforts to launch a major women’s business initiative in Virginia.” According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, there are more than 8.3 million women-owned businesses in the U.S., generating nearly $1.3 trillion in revenues and employing more than 7.6 million people. In the past 15 years women-owned businesses increased by 54 percent compared to 37 percent for all businesses.
