HP Debuts Mobile Service Delivery Platform for Operators to Integrate and Manage New Services
HP announced a telecommunications platform that provides mobile operators a more efficient way to launch, integrate, and manage new wireless services for their subscribers. The HP Mobile Service Delivery Platform (MSDP) is a powerful set of telecommunications software and tools, partner solutions, carrier-grade hardware, and integration services. Combined, these elements constitute an integrated environment to incorporate all of an operator's different mobile services, such as messaging, location, and entertainment. MSDP incorporates HP-developed technologies as well as those from partners to enrich MSDP with features that add significant value for mobile operators. Key among these providers is BEA, which partners with HP to create integrated solutions. The BEA WebLogic Application Server is optimized on the HP platform, forming a core component in the middleware infrastructure of MSDP. HP is leveraging existing relationships with innovative mobility solution providers 724 Solutions, ACCESS, Elata, MobileAware, Netegrity, Pixo, Purematrix, Vignette, and Volantis.

Storage News

New Disk Drive Line-up for Midrange rp8400, rp7410, rp7405 Servers

A number of disk changes will affect HP’s midrange servers (rp7405, rp7410, and rp8400) as of March 1, 2003.



  • A new 73-gigabyte, 15,000-rpm disk (A7082A) will replace the existing 73-gigabyte, 10,000-rpm disk (A6725A)

  • Please note that the 73-gigabyte, 10,000-rpm disk included with the rp7405 bundled configuration will be replaced by the new 73-gigabyte, 15,000-rpm drive.

  • A new 146-gigabyte, 10,000-rpm disk (A7083A) will expand the maximum disk capacity in all of our midrange systems.

  • The 18-gigabyte, 10,000-rpm disk (A6723A) will reach obsolescence.

  • The 36-gigabyte, 15,000-rpm disk (A6831A) will continue to be available for all midrange products.



Data Protector 5.1 Beta Packages Available


The Data Protector 5.1 beta packages are now available. Customers and channel partners can register and obtain the software today if they want to evaluate our new 5.1 capabilities in a pre-release fashion specifically:

Avoid Data Corruption


HP Data Integrity Check for Oracle provides the XP disk array with an added level of data protection when deployed in Oracle database environments. This solution allows customers to activate Oracle's hardware assisted resilient data (HARD) checks in the XP disk arrays. It reviews each write as it arrives at the disk array preventing corruption of the database and identifying the errant writer. Strategy for Securing Web Services

Web services standards for security are just beginning to emerge and stabilize; yet lack of security standards is listed as the top barrier to web services adoption. Many project teams are reluctant to use web services because of the risk involved in adopting too early. Integrating J2EE and .NET Web Services: A Developer Experience

Many articles have claimed that Java 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) and .NET Web services are interoperable. What does this mean from a developer's perspective? What issues and problems arise as you actually do the work?


Analysts have projected that J2EE and .NET will each have approximately 40% of the Web services that will be implemented on their platform. This means that for a customer to be able to utilize all the Web services that will be available in the future, the platforms need to interoperate. Companies from both camps are working together to ensure interoperability. Several standards bodies have been formed to drive interoperability between the various Web services platform providers.

HP and BEA Optimize BEA WebLogic Server for HP Itanium 2-based Solutions

HP and BEA Systems, Inc., the world's leading application infrastructure software company, announced in March the availability of BEA's WebLogic Server 7.0 on HP's Itanium 2-based server platform, jointly providing a proven solution for cost-effective J2EE performance. Customers can now easily migrate applications to Itanium-based systems and realize a significant and sustainable computing performance edge.


BEA's WebLogic Server is available today on the HP-UX 11i v 1.6 operating system running on HP's Itanium 2-based servers. By running the solution on the Itanium architecture, customers and systems integrators (SIs) can effectively integrate legacy and Web-based applications faster than before, improving productivity and responsiveness.
With HP's broad line of Itanium-based servers, enterprises, independent software vendors (ISVs) and SIs can efficiently create and integrate business applications and Web services on HP-UX today, and, in the coming months, on Linux and Windows operating systems.

Flying Higher: HP Solutions Deliver the Best RoIT for Continental Airlines
With IT consolidation solutions from HP, Continental Airlines has optimized its infrastructure and achieved a payback period of less than one year. Two Superdome servers running the HP-UX 11i operating system—one a production server and the other for failover and development—reside in different buildings about a block and a half apart. “The beauty of the Superdome system, with its ability to configure multiple partitions, is that it acts as a discrete server within a server. This permits each business to remain in control of its own operational criteria,” says Dan Morales, Continental's managing director of Financial Systems. Microsoft Direction for Superdome Mentioned in CNET News Article

Microsoft indicates that they are working with HP to have Datacenter Edition software available on the Superdome platform. In a February 24 CNET.com news article entitled “Microsoft sets date for Windows Server” (http://news.com.com/2100-1001-985668.html?tag=prntfr), Matt Loney discusses the release-to-manufacture dates for the seven flavors of Microsoft's latest server operating system—including a U.S. launch date of April 24. Loney points out that “Microsoft will also launch 64-bit versions of the two high-end operating systems; Datacenter Edition 64-bit will be able to scale to 64-processor servers, as opposed to the 32-bit version which will, like the current Windows 2000 Datacenter Edition, be confined to 32-processor servers.” Related to this, Mark Tennant, Microsoft's Windows Server product marketing manager, is quoted as saying, “We've been working with Hewlett-Packard on its 64-way Superdome servers.” This will provide Superdome system customers with a huge advantage over IBM’s Regatta and the Sun Fire15K products, since neither will be able to support this environment.



Network World Comments on the “Partitioning Bonanza”

In the February 24 issue of Network World, an article entitled “Partitioning Bonanza: UNIX Servers: The Future of High-End Boxes” (page 24) offers the advantages of partitioning on high-end servers. There are several key points to note from a high-end server standpoint.



  • “We'll be running PeopleSoft 8 with an Oracle database engine in four partitions—[the partitions] contain Web server, application server, database server, and test and development,” says David Meacham, director of IT for Delaware North Companies, a concessions and hospitality company in Buffalo, NY [and a new Superdome system customer]. “We are replacing an HP V-Class Enterprise Server V2250 and an HP K360 server with Superdome,” Meacham says. “We looked at buying several machines, but because of the size of our database, we needed to have 24 processors for PeopleSoft alone. We didn't feel comfortable bringing in systems where capacity had already hit the ceiling.”

  • The article also lays out the advantages and disadvantages of different types of partitioning, stating, “The disadvantage of physical partitioning [is that] machines cannot be divided into as many partitions” and “… logical partitioning does not have the electrical isolation of hardware partitioning, it is not immune to failures.” Since HP is the only vendor to offer both physical and logical partitioning, it offers us a distinct competitive advantage.

  • And lastly, “HP will introduce a version of its Superdome server midyear that would let different operating systems run in separate partitions.” HP will be the only vendor that can accomplish this.

HP Retains UNIX Crown

For the second quarter running, HP has held the number-one position in the UNIX market by revenue, according to IDC's Quarterly Tracker for the fourth calendar quarter of 2002 (http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2003/030228a.html). On top of the great results for our UNIX business, HP is also number one in Linux and SIAS technologies. Following are the highlights for the BCS business:



  • HP held the number one position in high-end, midrange, and overall UNIX revenue.

    • High-end UNIX server revenue grew sequentially 18 percent during the fourth calendar quarter of 2002 at the expense of IBM, which declined 60 percent. This growth was driven by the success of Superdome servers in IT consolidation, data warehousing, and high-performance technical computing.

    • For the sixth year in a row, HP led the world in midrange UNIX server revenue for the fourth quarter and the calendar year 2002, shipping more systems than IBM and Sun Microsystems combined in the fourth quarter of 2002.

Superdome Server Powered by Itanium 2 Processors Steals the Show at Intel Developer Forum

A Superdome server powered by Itanium 2 technology made a major splash at the recent Intel Developer Forum (IDF) show. Two thousand attendees watched as HP and Intel demonstrated the server simultaneously running multiple operating environments. The live demo consisted of three partitions, each a different platform: Windows running SQL Server, HP-UX running Oracle, and Linux displaying the K Desktop Environment (KDE). Scott Stallard, HP senior vice president; David Soper, HP engineering staff; and Mike Fister, Intel senior vice president did a great job highlighting HP’s and Intel's Itanium technology effort during the keynote.

New Innovations: sx1000 Chipset and MX2 Module
HP recently announced two significant technical innovations for our upcoming server models based on the Itanium architecture.

  • The HP sx1000 chipset, scheduled for mid-2003, which brings Itanium processors to our midrange and high-end cell board–based HP 9000 servers

  • The HP mx2 dual processor module, scheduled for the first half of 2004, which doubles the number of Itanium processors in our servers

Itanium 2 Selected as “Server Processor of the Year”

The Intel Itanium 2 processor was recently named “Server Processor of the Year” for 2002 by the technology analysts of In-Stat/MDR, the publisher of Microprocessor Report. The Itanium 2 processor beat out other nominees such as Fujitsu’s Sparc64 V, AMD’s Opteron, and the Intel Xeon processor with HyperThreading. Sun’s SPARC and IBM’s Power architectures did not even reach the list of finalists. Microprocessor Report stated, “We have … selected the Intel Itanium 2 processor as our … Analysts’ Choice for Best Server Processor of 2002 for its wide and diverse system implementations, leading projected system performance, and platform longevity, plus Intel’s ability to hit introduction targets (now that Merced is out of the way). Itanium 2 has shown that the architecture can work, and the roadmap shows that it can also scale in the future.”

This summer, HP will introduce a broad range of servers, from entry-level to high-end, that will utilize new processors based on the Itanium architecture, co-developed by HP and Intel.

NonStop TMF Software Performance Update

NonStop Transaction Management Facility (NonStop TMF) software is a fault-tolerant disk and transaction manager that provides transaction atomicity and database integrity. It ensures that if any part of a business transaction fails, the entire transaction will be backed out—leaving the database in the same consistent state that it was in before the transaction started. The new release of HP NonStop Servlets for JavaServer Pages (JSP) software leverages Tomcat 4.0.3, the open-source implementation of Java™ servlet and JSP technologies. Java servlets and JSP are popular tools for implementing Web-oriented applications, offering the advantage of Java 2, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) technology without the complexity of Enterprise JavaBeans. NonStop Servlets for JSP Version 2.0 software includes the new features of the recent Tomcat 4.0.3 implementation. Version 2.0 continues the tradition of doing deep ports of open source code, enabling customers to quickly develop Web applications based on popular Internet languages and standards while retaining the advantages of the NonStop platform.

New 15,000-rpm, 72-gigabyte Disk Drive

HP introduces a new 15,000-rpm, 72-gigabyte disk drive product for NonStop S-series servers: the 4672 disk drive. The 4672 disk drive delivers massive storage capacity and extremely high performance through its 15,000-rpm rotational speed and reduced seek times. The 4672 disk drive is an excellent fit for applications requiring massive data storage capacity and, at 15,000 rpm, this product is also a perfect fit for many online transaction-processing (OLTP) applications.

OpenVMS Supports the New Generation of AlphaServer Systems

On January 10, 2003, the newest AlphaServer systems began shipping to OpenVMS customers. These systems deliver a major evolutionary leap in performance based on the EV7 processor. The OpenVMS operating system supports the AlphaServer ES47 rack and tower models, as well as the AlphaServer GS1280 server, initially supporting up to 16 CPUs in a single system. OpenVMS continues to support full cluster capability with this new generation of AlphaServer systems, with its ability to connect them into existing AlphaServer and HP VAX clusters. The OpenVMS operating system takes advantage of the extraordinary performance characteristics of the next-generation AlphaServer platforms. Thorough testing of selected real-world customer applications with the AlphaServer GS1280 server demonstrated performance increases ranging from 1.5 to 3.0 times higher throughput over older AlphaServer systems. Performance improvements of an AlphaServer GS1280 will depend on many factors, including your existing hardware configuration, current version of software, the software application, and workload. HP provides a full range of tools, services, and benchmark centers to help you explore performance requirements. Support for the new platforms with OpenVMS is with Version 7.3-1 and an additional patch kit installation to allow full system operation. Exciting New Performance Information on the rp7405, rp7410 and rp8400

It is important to look at a broad spectrum of benchmarks to determine “real world” performance. Performance claims based on single benchmarks typically do not accurately represent true business needs. HP has proven time and again that it has superior performance --- with best-in-class results in system performance, processor performance, and application performance. This article points out a few examples.


First, the 16-way rp8400 offers the #1 Java performance among all comparable midrange systems. This 16-way server beats a Power-4 based IBM P670, and more incredibly, a Sun Fire 6800 with 24 processors! This result may be one reason why we haven’t seen a lot of benchmark results from Sun lately, despite their claims of superior performance. Also, in the 8-way space, HP’s rp7410 achieved the #1 8-way Java result, outperforming the new IBM p650!
Additionally, the rp8400 achieved the #1 result in OLTP performance among all midrange systems, as well as the #1 Web performance result. It’s important to note that these results are with the 750 MHz processor, not HP’s higher performing 875 MHz processor.
Balanced performance benchmark places HP at the top

Many manufacturers point to one or two benchmarks, but isolated benchmarks do not necessarily translate into-real world performance. Realizing this shortcoming, IDC created a new standard called “balanced performance” that measures the three axis of system performance: processors, memory, and scaling. Of all the midrange systems tested, HP’s rp8400 placed #1 and the rp7410 placed #2. IBM’s P670 placed #7 and their P660-6M1 placed #43. Sun’s V880 placed #34 and their Sun Fire 3800 placed #48.


In the future, HP’s midrange performance leadership will grow significantly. HP is the only vendor to offer in-box upgrades to two architectures - PA-RISC or Itanium. The addition of Itanium processors to the midrange late this year, as well as the addition of the dual-core PA-8800 processor (doubling the number of CPUs in each system) early in 2004, will significantly increase the performance of HP’s midrange systems!

HP - clear choice in midrange server market


To summarize, HP’s midrange servers provide better, across-the-board performance than its competitors and has been the clear choice as the leader in midrange market share since 1997. This performance translates to greater processing power that will speed computing transactions and save customers time and money.

More World-record Benchmarks for HP Servers with Itanium 2 Processors

 

HP has set more world-record benchmarks with its servers based on the Intel Itanium 2 microarchitecture, reinforcing its superiority over that of competing processors.



  • The HP rx5670 server running HP-UX has the leading 4-processor SPECweb99_SSL result of 2,280. This beats IBM’s recent 4-processor result (AIX running on the 1.45-gigahertz Power4+ architecture) by 15 percent.

  • The rx2600 server, also running HP-UX, has the leading 2-processor SPECweb99_SSL result of 1,230. This beats IBM’s recent result (Linux running on the Xeon architecture) by 7 percent.

In partnership with Zeus, a world expert on Internet infrastructure and performance, HP’s Internet Performance team achieved these leadership results through application optimization on the high-performance Itanium 2 microarchitecture.
