Reference Services

Consult the librarian at the Reference Desk for help in starting your research or using library resources, such as online catalog and electronic databases.

Apply for Campus ID/Library cards, check out or return books at the Circulation Desk. Also borrow reserved materials, videotapes, DVD’s, books from Hawaiian Collection, and back issues of periodicals.

The resources and services provided at the library are designed to support our students, faculty, staff and the general public in their scholarly endeavors. Everyone is welcome to visit our facility and peruse the collections. However, certain resources and services are restricted to those affiliated with the University of Hawaii system.

Uniform loan periods, fines and fees have been implemented throughout the UH system libraries since the beginning of 2003. Students can use their library cards at KCC and other UH libraries to borrow circulating materials.

Contains books in all subject areas arranged by Library of Congress Classification System. Includes Oversize section at the end.

Contains about 200 journals, magazines, and newspapers in many subject areas. Arranged by title in alphabetical order. For library use only.

Contains New York Times, Honolulu Advertiser, and Honolulu Star Bulletin on microfilm since 1980. Also contains selected magazines on microfilm such as Time, Newsweek, U.S. News & World Report, and National Geographic since 1965.

Contains materials reserved by instructors for students to use. Check Hawaii Voyager Online Catalog by instructor or course for availability.

Contains books on Hawaiian studies. Open Stacks located on the first floor behind the Reference Desk. Hawaiian Reference and Hawaiian Special Collection books need to be paged at the Circulation Desk. Most have two-week loan period.

Contains popular books donated by the Japan Forum and Japan Foundation. The majority of them are in Japanese while some in English.

Contains over 800 books in Chinese and English on Chinese studies that includes scholarly works to popular readings, such as Chinese philosophy, religion, genealogy, history, language, literature, food and herbal remedies, and the arts, including Peking opera, Hakka folk songs. For Char room use only.

Contains scholarly books in Asian languages, including Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

Contains selected classical and contemporary works of fiction and non-fiction. Books in this collection are popular with students learning English as a second language.

Contains selected educational videos for viewing in the library. KCC Videos are being cataloged now and some are now listed in Hawaii Voyager. Ask for the printed listing at the Circulation Desk.

Collection of databases with some full-text databases covering social sciences, religion, business, computer science, psychology, health, education and more. Over 20,000 periodical titles are indexed with the majority available in full text.

Full text for nearly 4,600 scholarly publications (over 3,900 peer-reviewed journals). Index and abstracts for all 8,470 journals in the collection. Coverage: computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies, and many more. Provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing, allows users to search abstracts from over 4,800 current biomedical journals. Will import the full text articles from the other EBSCOhost databases.

Provides in-depth coverage across the full spectrum of subject areas covered by complementary and alternative medicine dating back to 1990. The majority of the full text titles included in the database are available in native (searchable) PDF, or scanned-in-color.

NewsBank is the world's largest full-text news database with 4,789 U.S. and international news sources, newswires, transcripts, business journals, periodicals, and government documents, updated daily.

The Library's subscription to Journals@OVID includes the Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW) Total Access Collection: of 344 full text Journals. Full access to all tables of contents and bibliographic citations for every journal in Journals@Ovid is also available.

STAT!Ref is a full text database from 2000 to present of more than 70 medical texts including tables and graphics, updated quarterly. Features the latest editions.

This is the world's largest electronic collection of science (including social sciences, arts and humanities), technology, and medicine full text and bibliographic information. It includes over 10.2 million full text articles and over 60 million abstracts about 2550 journals and 1920 in full text. The University of Hawaii System Libraries have purchased access to almost every journal in ScienceDirect, from 1995 to present. 10,500+ books.

National Library of Medicine’s search service to MEDLINE and other related databases. Full-text articles are available for some journals – Use the LinkOut Filter after you setup a free account. There is a short tutorial on Library LinkOut under Tutorial Navigation.

Similar to Google Web Search; just enter the keyword or phrase you're looking for into the Google Book Search box. Just below the search box, there is a pull down menu labeled Showing.

You can select All books, Limited preview and full view or Full view only (will show the entire book).
All books: will get you everything in the listing, most of the books have no full text.

Limited preview: will get you some current information. Part of the book are missing.

Full view only: will give you full text but mostly historical documents.
Click on a book title and you'll see basic info about the book just like you'd see in an online catalog. You might also see a few snippets - sentences of your search term in context.
