NYLT Position Definition – Youth Staff

Position Name: Senior Course Director

Description


The Senior Course Director has the overall responsibility for presentation of the NYLT courses. This position is unique to the Atlanta Area Council due to the number of course offered. For other councils running single courses, these responsibilities fall to the Scoutmaster of the course.

It is the Senior Course Director’s responsibility to ensure that all courses have the proper personnel (i.e. filling all adult and youth staff positions while ensuring a balance of personalities, talent and ability), equipment, and supplies to present the national syllabus for AAC-NYLT. Working with the NYLT committee to obtain all necessary supplies, personnel and equipment is paramount.


Qualifications / Pre-Requisites





  • Registered Scouter

  • At least 21 years of age

  • Wood Badge trained (preferably 21st century course)

  • Served as NYLT Scoutmaster, 2 yrs preferred

  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills, and be a self-starter

  • Good organization skills

  • Attention to detail and strong fiscal skills

  • Able to let youth perform major leadership roles

Training





  • Course Directors Conference training (w/i 18 months)

  • Trainers EDGE

  • Wood Badge training (21st Century version preferred)

  • Served in various NYLT positions, 2 years as SM preferred

  • Online: Youth Protection – Scouting and Venturing and Weather Hazards

Duties/Responsibilities





  • Select your senior course leader

  • Selection of SMs and SPLs along with pairings

  • Fill staff adult positions working with committee

  • Set weekend schedules/agendas with your senior course leader (SCL)

  • Presentation assignments for Trainers Edge course and orientation weekend program

  • Confirm all supplies to be ordered and work with committee ordering specialist

  • Request staff guides, DVDs and binders

  • Decide on staff items – name tags, caps, t-shirts, patches, any special items

  • Watch adult, youth, and participate registration reports for numbers and weeks

  • Confirm patrol name appropriateness

  • Proof documents sent to parents and participants

  • Verify medical and participation forms

  • Keep first aid log

  • Interface to BASR Ranger prior to course for – grass cutting, fire ants, showers, dining flies, tables, stoves and propane, chuck boxes, etc.

  • Approve and handle any bead recognition for NYLT service(adult 3 or 4 “beaders”)

  • Graduation packets

  • Participate in Scouts Own Service

  • Arrange scouts night out / prefer on-site

  • Ensure evaluation completion for participants and staff

  • Closure reports
