A revered cemetery and vibrant park honoring Atlanta’s past and celebrating its future.

Our Mission


The Historic Oakland Foundation partners with the City of Atlanta to preserve, restore, enhance, and share Oakland Cemetery with the public as an important island of tranquility in the heart of the city.

Strategic Goals




  1. Implement the Master Plan

  2. Increase and diversify funding and resources

  3. Enhance human capital: staff, board, and volunteers

  4. Increase brand awareness, community relations, and partnerships


Strategic Objectives




  1. Implement the Master Plan.

1.Execute the Master Plan to include the following projects (see update):

        • Complete restoration of the oldest and most historic areas of the cemetery: Original Six Acres (2019), Jewish sections (2017), Bobby Jones gravesite and surrounding area (2017), and African-American section (2018)

        • Relocate Buckhead Men’s Garden Club’s greenhouse located at Atlanta History Center (2015) and evaluate develop and interpret operations areas: carriage house, stables, boiler room, and bell tower/sexton quarters (2019)

        • Implement Geodatabase system for entire cemetery (2016)

        • Develop plan for a columbarium (2015)

2.Update the Master Plan annually to allow reprioritization of projects as necessary to accommodate new challenges and opportunities.

3.Develop and implement a master plan project management system as part of the Geodatabase system to accelerate execution and improve reporting.

  1. Increase and diversify funding and resources.

4.Raise $1 – $1.5 million per year by more actively cultivating and soliciting board members, descendants of people buried at Oakland, other major donors, HOF members, governments, foundations and endowment income.

5.Increase revenue from programs, museum sales, and services to $1 million.

6.Conduct a capital campaign feasibility study by 2016 to explore funding the updated Master Plan and increase the endowment to provide more funds for ongoing maintenance and preservation.


  1. Enhance human capital: staff, board, and volunteers.

7.Develop staff and leadership capacity for Master Plan implementation and organizational sustainability. Priorities include: improving staff training, teamwork, retention, performance management, updated policies and procedures, and succession planning.

8.Strengthen board with more diversity of talent and experience that reflects the community and is more engaged in governance, community awareness, and fundraising.

9.Sustain and leverage volunteer strengths and skills in more functional areas, and recruit from more diverse groups.



  1. Increase brand awareness, community relations and partnerships.

10.Improve awareness of Oakland through more consistent and frequent external marketing to expand and diversify attendance, volunteer base, and financial support.

11.Improve community relations with expanded well-branded events, outreach, education programs, and strong relationships with local neighborhoods.



12.Leverage partnerships with the City of Atlanta, local universities, tourism agencies, and arts, history, preservation, and garden organizations.
