Papers in SCI-listed journals which cite one or more of the following PRIMER primary sources:

(a) Clarke & Warwick 1994 & 2001 & 2014 Change in Marine Communities (1st, 2nd & 3rd editions of PRIMER Methods manual)

(b) Clarke & Gorley 2001 & 2006 & 2015 PRIMER User manual/Tutorial (for PRIMER v5, v6 & v7)

(c) Clarke 1993 Australian Journal of Ecology Non-parametric multivariate analyses of changes in community structure, setting out the core PRIMER methods (it is suggested in the earlier PRIMER manuals that users can cite this reference for the software if they want a ‘white’ literature reference)

This does not guarantee that citing papers have used PRIMER but a very large percentage of them will have done so and, equally, a large number of PRIMER-using papers will have cited one of the many other source papers for PRIMER methods, see a partial list on the web site. In particular, citations to the now widely used taxonomic distinctness ideas (Warwick & Clarke MEPS 1995, Clarke & Warwick J Appl Ecol 1998, Clarke & Warwick MEPS 2001, …) implemented in PRIMER will be inadequately represented, as with other well-cited methods of the last 15 years (eg. Clarke et al JEMBE 2006, 2008).

By 28 March 2015, there were 12,140 different citing papers for one or more of (a), (b) & (c), with (a) cited by 6542 papers, (b) by 5231 and (c) by 5057. These 12,140 papers were from 976 different SCI-listed journals. The ‘species-accumulation curve’, i.e. the cumulative number of different journals (y axis) against the number of citing papers (x axis) is shown below, followed by a detailed listing of all 12,140 papers, in order of their date of appearance in the Thomson-Reuters SCI (Web of Science). For convenience, the listing of papers is in reverse order, oldest last, though the ‘species-area’ curve is plotted in the usual time order, oldest first.
