Postdoctoral position in the 21st Century COE program

“Advance Science and Technology Center for Dynamic Earth”

Tohoku University, Sendai
Advanced Science and Technology Center for Dynamic Earth at Tohoku University invites applications for post-doctoral positions in 4 research categories. The appointment will be for one year. Successful candidates are expected to contribute actively to the following research categories.
Category 1: Solid Earth Research Group (Number of vacancies - 1)

We are looking for a young scientist with excellent academic background and proven research record to actively engage in research dealing with clarification of medium inhomogeneity with various scales beneath island arcs and subducition zones. Besides, he/she is expected to be familiar with wave theory and numerical simulation.


Category 2: Fluid Earth and Planetary Research Group (Number of vacancies -1)

A young scientist who is enthusiastic in aurora science using satellite data, in addition, who is able to participate in space mission for planet(s) in the near future, is expected.


Category 3: Earth Evolution Research Group (Number of vacancies - 1)

Postdoctoral fellow to study the problems related to origin of life and early evolution of life (Scientists who have experiences of the following experiments are highly desired: high P and T autoclave, HPLC, LC/MS, stable isotope mass spectroscopy, TEM, microbial incubation experiments)


Category 4: Besides the above, we are also looking to fill a remaining position. Successful candidate is expected to actively interact and collaborate with scientists in the research groups mentioned above by incorporating new technologies from the engineering field. The potential research topics are as follows: (a) Shock wave and impact experiments and their numerical simulations: (b) Application of small gravity to Earth and material Sciences: (c) Pock fracturing and wave propagation (including applied geophysics): (d) High pressure research and Rheology: (e) Hydrothemal experiments; and (f) prediction and prevention of natural hazards (including earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis)

Qualifications:

  1. PhD as of March 31, 2007

  2. Should be under 35 years of age as of April 1, 2007

Number of vacancies:

We anticipate a total of 3 - 4 vacancies
Starting date: April 1, 2007

Salary will be in the range between \300,000 to \400,000 per month.
