Rochelle Goldberg 10-12 Band Chairperson Kevin Bill Michelle Williams - OrchestraMichelle Williams grew up in Bainbridge, NY where she began playing the violin at the age of five. Her instructors were Chris Cumming, Judy Niles, and Sue Hoffmann. She later studied with Dezso Vaghy and went on to earn a Bachelor of Music with a Performers Certificate from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. After teaching in the South Colonie School District near Albany for three years, she earned her Masters of Music in Violin Performance from West Virginia University, where she also taught string pedagogy classes and supervised student teachers in the Music Education program. Ms. Williams returned to Albany to continue her teaching in the South Colonie School District where she has instructed 4th, 7th and 8th grade students for the last seven years. She has performed with several orchestras in the Albany and surrounding areas, including the Albany, Glens Falls, Schenectady, Utica and Catskill Symphonies, She has also served as concertmaster of the Troy Orchestra and the Christian Arts International ensemble. She teaches a small studio of private students and plays often on the worship team at her church as well as in several small chamber groups. Ms. Williams also enjoys playing alternative style music on her violin and has been a member of two bands in the Albany area in the groups Hundred Monkey Theory and Faded ReFLEXion. David M. Brown - ChorusDavid M. Brown is the Director of Fine and Performing Arts for the Ithaca City School District. In this administrative position, he leads all of the music art and theater staff<. This is his first year in this position. Previously, he was the District Coordinator of Music for the Fayetteville-Manlius School District, where he administered all of the music programs while teaching High School Chorale, Women's Chorale, AP Theory, and serving as Artistic Director for the Spring Musical. His credits as a director at F-M include: Legally Blonde, White Christmas, Jekyll and Hyde, Into the Woods, and Les Miserables. He has a Master's Degree in Music Education from Ithaca College, and a Bachelor's Degree from Nazareth College. Mr. Brown is a certified administrator with a degree from SUNY Brockport. He has additional Doctoral credits in Advanced Music Theory from the Eastman School of Music. He is presently in his third year as NYSSMA Zone Representative, serving the area from Syracuse to Binghamton. He is an All-State Vocal Adjudicator and a member of the NYSSMA Executive Committee. When not leading the Arts, he is an avid 200+ bowler, but mostly, the loves of his life are his wife, Melissa, four year old daughter, Sophia, and two year old son Nicholas. Art Carichner - BandArt Carichner taught 34 years for the Horseheads School District. For 24 years he assisted and directed the Marching Band as well as conducted the Symphonic and Concert Bands. As Marching Band Director the band won two state titles and traveled extensively participating in four Disney Parades as well as festivals in California, Virginia, Ohio and Canada. In 1996 Mr. Carichner received the Golden Apple award for excellence in teaching, and in 2002 selected as teacher of the year by Horseheads National Honor Society. Mr. Carichner was appointed Director of the Music Department in 1997. In 2001 Mr. Carichner started directing the Wind Ensemble. Under his direction the band received seven Gold with Distinction level six awards at NYSSMA Majors. The Wind Ensemble performed at the New York State Band Directors Conference and has hosted several guest composers including Francis McBeth, Frank Ticheli, Jack Stamp, Andrew Boysen, David Holsinger, Chris Tucker, and Timothy Mahr. Mr. Carichner served as assistant and Chairman for the New York All State Bands for NYSSMA. Mr. Carichner serves as an All State and NYSSMA Majors adjudicator. Rebecca Spena 5-6 Chorus Co-Chairpeople Steve Crowle, Kacey Weaver and Ann Reed 7-9 Band Co-Chairpeople Denise Corcoran and Chris Lewis-King 10-12 Orchestra Co-Chairpeople Brenda Schmidt and Stephenie Swart Sophia Miller - ChorusSophia Miller, Assistant Conductor of the award-winning Young People's Chorus of New York City, serves as the principal conductor of the Prelude and Intermezzo choruses and as vocal coach and assistant conductor of all of the other four YPC divisions. In addition, she is the director of YPC's Partner Schools and College Bound programs and teaches in YPC's Satellite Schools, a program that brings the acclaimed YPC choral curriculum into public schools throughout New York City. Since joining YPC in 2007, Ms. Miller has conducted at Lincoln Center's Rose Theater, the 92nd Street Y, Merkin Concert Hall at Kaufman Center, Symphony Space, and led YPC's Prelude and Intermezzo choruses in April 2012 in her Carnegie Hall conducting debut. She prepares YPC choruses for radio and television appearances, recording sessions, and for performances not only in New York City, but also in major venues throughout North America, Asia, Europe, and South America for YPC's global tours. As part of her work with YPC, she collaborates directly with many of the most distinguished artists of our time, such as the Kronos Quartet, the Stephen Petronio Dance Company, and The New York Pops. Outside of YPC, Ms. Miller is the music director of SoHo Voce, a women's ensemble based in New York City and is an active studio recording artist for commercial, film and choral demos. As a choral clinician, she has given workshops and guest-conducted at the School for Strings in New York City, and throughout New England and New York State. Ms. Miller is a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Ithaca College School of Music where she studied conducting with Dr. Janet Galvan. Chad West - Band Chad West is Assistant Professor of Music Education at Ithaca College where he teaches undergraduate and graduate instrumental music education. His degrees are from the University of Michigan (Ph.D.), University of Georgia, and Arizona State University. Prior to joining Ithaca College, Dr. West taught middle school band in Georgia and served as the Associate Conductor of The Atlanta Wind Symphony. In addition to his teaching, he also performed as lead trumpeter for Princess Cruise Lines. He has published numerous articles on music education and presents annually at state and national music conferences on the topics of beginning jazz improvisation, band arranging, retaining students from middle school to high school band, pre-service music teacher education, and research design. His wife Amy teaches elementary general music in Johnson City, NY. Shana Stewart - Orchestra Shana Stewart has been teaching and conducting strings at Penfield High School in Rochester, NY for 11 years. Before that, she was lucky enough to have started out her career in Penn Yan, NY and still holds a special place in her heart for the people who live on the shores of Keuka Lake. She has her undergraduate degree in violin performance and music education and her master’s degree in music education, both from Ithaca College. Shana has been a guest presenter at several state and local music teacher conferences on the topic of using Portfolios in the Instrumental Music Classroom. Although Shana is passionate about teaching and conducting, she also loves to perform and has recently played with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the Three Irish Tenors. She subs with the Genesee String Quartet and the Nik and the Nice Guys String Quartet for weddings and events, and has also performed with the Rochester Oratorio Society, the Empire Lyric Theater Orchestra, and the Greater Rochester Women’s Philharmonic. Shana has a small private studio of violinists and violists who are just as excited about music as she is. Shana’s most precious accomplishments, by far, are her two children, Jaden and Connor, who are 2 and 4 respectively, and who make all of the music in the world more beautiful just by being in it. Jackie Kovacs 10-12 Jazz Ensemble Chairperson Robin Linaberry 5-6 Band Co-Chairpeople Jackie Kovacs and Erinn Hibbard 7-9 Orchestra Co-Chairpeople Jackie Kovacs and Rene Schmidt 10-12 Chorus Chairperson Kristine Ruffo Dr. Michael Galloway - Jazz EnsembleDr. Michael Galloway is the Director of Jazz Studies at the internationally-acclaimed music department of Mansfield University. Dr. Galloway's jazz teaching includes courses in improvisation and arranging. He also conducts the award-winning MU Jazz Ensemble, which has appeared at major festivals, conferences, and conventions. He has performed with the U.S. Marine Band, National Gallery Orchestra, Duluth-Superior, Elmira, and Williamsport Symphonies, and at the White House, Kennedy Center, Wolf-Trap, and Smithsonian. Recordings include Nineteenth Century Ballroom Music on keyed bugle (Nonesuch), and the Mansfield Brass Quintet CD Voluntary, on which many of the selections are his arrangements. He recently arranged Duke Ellington's Come Sunday for the Mansfieldians Vocal Jazz ensemble. Shannon Schmiedel - BandShannon Schmiedel is presently in her second year of teaching at Fabius-Pompey Central Schools where she conducts the high school and sixth grade concert bands. Prior to her appointment in Fabius-Pompey, she spent five years teaching the seventh and eighth grade bands in the Grand Island Central School District, and two years teaching the middle and high school bands in the Wellsville Central School District. Her bands have consistently received Gold and Gold with Distinction awards at NYSSMA Major Ensemble Festivals. Mrs. Schmiedel holds a Bachelor of Music degree from Houghton College (flute emphasis) and a Master of Music Education Degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She has participated in conducting master classes with H. Robert Reynolds, Robert Cameron, Donald McKinney and Adam Brennen and she has studied conducting with Gary Stith. Mrs. Schmiedel is an active member of MENC, NYSSMA, NYSBDA, OCMEA and the Rochester Flute Association. Roberta Warfield - OrchestraRoberta Warfield, received her B.S. in Music Education from Hartwick College and an M.A. and S.A.S. in Related Arts and Education Administration from New York University. She is very active in her school community serving on the Instructional Council, Curriculum Committee, Policy Board and a variety of other committees. She has served on the New York School Music Association Crisis Team, the Public Relations Coordinator for Orange County Music Educators and has been the Orchestra Coordinator for both Orange and Westchester Counties. For many years she served as the Program Coordinator for the Ithaca String Institute. She is a sought after Guest Conductor, NYSSMA adjudicator and clinician with her most recent session at The Ohio String Teachers Conference. In keeping with her commitment to string education, she participated in an exchange of string education practices with The People’s Republic of China and traveled to China in 1995 for that purpose. She is an active member of The American String Teachers Association and served on the Committee for School Strings and Past President of The New York Chapter of ASTA. Currently, she is the orchestra director at Fox Lane Middle School in Bedford, New York. Her groups have performed for state legislators as well as at the county and state levels. Most recently, her orchestra performed at The American String Teachers Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. Roberta enjoys time at the beach and skiing with friends. She currently resides in Washingtonville, New York with her husband, two children and a German short -haired pointer. Joseph Stillitano - ChorusJoseph Stillitano has been teaching music in the Westborough Public Schools since 2001. He was both the high school and middle school choral director from 2001-2012, and currently is the middle school choral director, conducting the Gibbons Middle School Chorus and Concert Choir. Mr. Stillitano is also on staff of the Handel & Haydn Society. Founded in 1815, the Society is America's oldest, continuously performing, arts organization. He conducts the Young Men's Chorus, a choir for advanced changed and changing male voices.
